PACIFIC DOWNS MEN’S BASKETBALL AT THE BUZZER, 73-71

Stockton, Calif. – Lesown Hallums Jr. hit a fadeaway shot as time expired to give the University of the Pacific a 73-71 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Friday evening at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Graduate student guard Kaiyem Cleary (Manchester, England/Redemption Christian Academy (NY)/Florida Southern/Florida Southwestern/Ball State) led the Dolphins in scoring for the third time this season with 19 points, including 11 in the second half, while adding six rebounds and three steals. Graduate student guard Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) recorded a season-high 13 points, including eight after halftime. Graduate student forward Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) recorded 12 points. Graduate student guard Mike DePersia (Cherry Hill, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial/IUPUI) registered his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 12 rebounds, while adding three steals.

Hallums Jr. led three Tigers in double figures with 21 points, 17 of which he scored in the second half, while adding four rebounds and three assists. Moe Odum tallied 16 of his 18 points in the opening half, while dishing out four assists and posting two steals. Judson Martindale recorded 16 points, including 10 after halftime. Donovan Williams led the Tigers with 11 rebounds.

"I thought we played well enough to win the game," said head coach Nate Champion '14. "Unfortunately, in the game of basketball, sometimes what you've done leading up to the last second doesn't necessarily mean that in the end, you're going to be the victor. But you know, I'm proud of the way that our guys fought. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well today, but we found ways to keep ourselves in the game and we found ways to have the lead late. But it's very evident in games like this that every possession, every little play matters. We had chances in transition early in the second half where we came up empty. We had a possession down there where we gave up two offensive rebounds down the stretch and then you know we missed the free throw there but you know, I think the kid hits a great shot and honestly, it's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes but, you know, overall, I felt like we got a lot better on this trip. And like you said, we showed that we belong, but it's not going to show up in the record and that's something that you know, it stinks because I thought our guys showed a lot of heart and a lot of toughness and put ourselves in a position to win the game. Unfortunately, it just didn't happen."

With the Dolphins leading by a point, 70-69, Hallums Jr. drew a foul with 14.4 seconds remaining. He proceeded to convert both foul shots to put the Tigers in front. After a timeout by Pacific, DePersia drove into the paint and drew a foul on a shot attempt with 1.9 seconds remaining. He missed the first shot, but made the second to even the score at 71 apiece.

Following a timeout by the Dolphins, the Tigers started with the ball on the right side of the baseline. Martindale heaved the ball down the right sideline to Hallums Jr., who caught the ball, took a dribble to free himself from a defender and then squared up to fire off a shot from just inside the three-point line. The shot went in just after the clock expired to give the Tigers their third win of the season.

The teams went back and forth over the opening six minutes of the game, resulting in a 13-11 Le Moyne lead. Sutherland tallied five points in the span, while Cleary had four and DePersia and junior forward Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) each had two.

The Tigers countered with 19 of the next 24 points to take a game-high 30-18 lead. Six players scored in the span for Pacific, led by eight points from Odum, including a three-pointer out of the under-8 media timeout for the 12-point advantage.

The Dolphins scored 11 straight points to close within one with 5:02 left. Sophomore guard Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) made a lay-up, DePersia drilled a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key, Mosquera scored in transition, Cleary made two free throws after a technical on the Pacific head coach and then Sutherland converted a pair of foul shots.

Following eight points from each team over the next five minutes, Tan Yildizoglu converted two foul shots with 0.5 seconds remaining in the half to give Pacific a 40-37 lead at the intermission.

The Dolphins opened the second half with the first seven points and 12 of the first 14 to open up a 49-42 lead at the 14:10 mark. Cleary started the run with a lay-up, Salter made a three-pointer from the left wing, Sutherland made a pair of lay-ups around a free throw in a three-possession span and then Cleary converted a lay-up to force for a Pacific timeout.

Pacific answered with six straight points, including five from Hallums Jr. to cut its deficit to one with 11:51 to play.

Senior guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) pushed Le Moyne's lead back to six with a lay-up and a three-pointer around the under-12 media timeout.

The Tigers scored the next eight points, including five from Martindale around a three-pointer from Jalen Brown, to regain the lead, 56-54, with 9:27 remaining.

Salter made five free throws around a lay-up by Martindale to put the Dolphins back in front, but Hallums Jr. answered with two free throws and Odum connected on a jumper to give Pacific a 62-59 lead with 6:52 to play.

Le Moyne scored the next four points on two free throws by Cleary and a lay-up by DePersia to take the lead back, 63-62, with 5:51 to go.

It was short-lived as Martindale answered with a three-pointer 19 seconds later and then Hallums Jr. made a lay-up for a 67-63 Pacific lead with 5:02 remaining.

The Dolphins tallied seven of the next nine points to take the lead for the final time. Cleary made a jumper and DePersia followed with a lay-up with 3:33 left to even the score at 67. Just as the shot clock was about to expire, Hallums Jr. knocked down a jumper from just inside the three-point line on the right wing. After an empty possession by each team, Cleary drove baseline and dunked the ball to even the score and made an ensuing free throw with 2:03 left for a 70-69 lead.

Each team had two empty possessions over the next 100 seconds to set up the dramatic final 15 seconds of the game.

Le Moyne (2-5) returns home to host SUNY Fredonia on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
