Syracuse, N.Y. – Graduate student forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) of the men's basketball team has been selected as the Le Moyne College Athlete of the Week, presented by King + King Architects, as announced by the department on Monday evening.
Sutherland receives the honor for the fifth time in his career following his performance during his team's 1-1 week in California. He recorded averages of 18.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocks to lead the Dolphins, while going 12-of-13 from the foul line.
He opened the week by scoring a season-high 24 points in an 80-70 victory on Tuesday over CSUN, which marked the program's first victory over a Division I program as a Division I program. He registered 14 of his points in the first half and finished the game going 9-of-9 from the foul line, while grabbing five rebounds. He was the first Dolphin to make nine free throws without a miss in a game since Malik Garner '19 went 10-of-10 on November 23, 2018 against the University of Pittsburg-Johnstown.
Sutherland closed out the team's four-game California roadtrip by recording 12 points and posting two rebounds.
Through seven games, he has a team-high 88 points and ranks second on the team with a 12.6 scoring average. He leads the team in field goals made (28), three-pointers made (13) and free throws made (19), while ranking second with a .864 mark from the foul line.
Le Moyne (2-5) is back in action on Wednesday by hosting SUNY Fredonia at 7:00 p.m.
