Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) has been named the Le Moyne College Athlete of the Week after registering the clinching point in both of the men's tennis team's NCAA Championships East Regional victories.
During Le Moyne's first round matchup with Saint Thomas Aquinas on Friday, the 'Phins went up 1-0 after the duo of
Peter Hatton and
Manuel Righi clinched the doubles point with a victory at second position, then Hatton and Righi both won earned a point during singles competition at first and second position, respectively, to give the Dolphins 3-0 advantage on the Spartans.
STAC fought all the way back with their season on the line, winning the next three decisions to tie the score at 3-3. The match came down to fourth positions singles between Piekarek and his opponent Lennart Lehmann. Everyone inside the QC Tennis Bubble watched as Piekarek fought to keep Le Moyne's season alive and send the Dolphins to the NCAA Championships Round of 32.
Piekarek had won the first set, 6-3, but Lehmann bounced back and took the second set, 4-6. Piekarek took a commanding 5-2 advantage during the third set, and served the match point. After a long rally, Lehmann hit the ball into the net, Piekarek let out a triumphant roar, and the
Le Moyne squad rushed over to celebrate their postseason victory.
The fifth-seeded Dolphins' round of 32 matchup with 33
rd-nationally ranked and top-seeded Queens College once again came down to Piekarek's battle at fourth singles, this time against Queens' Lucas Demuth.
Queens took a 1-0 lead over the Dolphins after winning second and third position doubles. Le Moyne went down 3-1 to the Knights early in the singles portion, then Righi and
Tom Jarry both earned tight wins in their dual matches to even the score at 3-3.
Once again, with all eyes on him, Piekarek delivered for the Dolphins. He claimed a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2 win at the fourth position to send Le Moyne through to the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Florida for the second consecutive year. Competition for the Round of 16 begins on May 11.
