WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS CONFERENCE MATCH AT LIU

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The LIU Sharks scored three second-half goals to claim a 3-0 win over the Le Moyne women's soccer team on Sunday in NEC action.

The Sharks and the Dolphins battled through heavy wind and rainy conditions at SUNY Maritime's Reinhart Field during the 90 minutes.

"We thought we started the game well, generated a couple of half-chances at the beginning," said Le Moyne head coach Jaro Zawislan. "Then, through the rest of the first half, we were very proud of our players for how they managed the playing conditions today. It was definitely challenging with the wind and rain going against us in the first half, but we managed it very well and with it being 0-0 at halftime on the road against a quality team in LIU, we thought we put ourselves in a very good position to get something out of this game. At the beginning of the second half, just as we were generating some momentum, unfortunately we gave up a goal. Credit to LIU, they capitalized on their chances."

The Dolphins created a quality chance less than 30 seconds into the match when freshman forward Hope Adigun (Clay, N.Y./Liverpool) sent a pass ahead for sophomore midfielder Lindsey LeBlanc (Westminster, Mass./St. Bernard's), who squeezed between two defenders on her run into the box and managed to take a left-footed shot that was saved by LIU goalkeeper Keely Thomas.

LIU forward Noa Bartels van Bosbeek hit the post in the 44th minute, but beyond that the Dolphins did not allow a shot on goal during the first half, and the score remained tied 0-0 after 45 minutes of play.

The Sharks broke the tie in the 57th minute when Casey Beauregard sent a pass on the ground from the right wing to the top of the 18-yard box for Stephanie Schubert, who hit a right-footed shot that took a deflection on its way towards goal and flew into the left side of the net.

LIU doubled its lead less than 10 minutes later when Beauregard cut towards the center of her team's attacking third and took a left-footed shot that was deflected and landed in the right side of the goal.

With just under 18 minutes remaining in the second half, senior midfielder Jenicah Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland/Cazenovia) sent a pass into the box from the left wing. Following an attempted clearance by an LIU defender, sophomore forward Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) stepped up to the loose ball and smashed a left-footed shot that flew just wide of the left post.

The Sharks scored their third and final goal with less than 15 seconds remaining in the second half when Gina Proviano sent a pass into Le Moyne's penalty area for Taylor Curcio, who finished off the play from inside the six-yard box.

"At 2-0 late in the game, we pushed numbers forward trying to get that first goal to close the gap and give ourselves a chance to get a result out of the game. The third goal was a direct result of our team pushing numbers forward," Zawislan added.

The Dolphins (2-7-2) will return to action on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. NEC match at Delaware State University.
