WOMEN'S SOCCER ADDS A POINT IN NEC STANDINGS WITH 0-0 DRAW AT DELAWARE STATE

Dover, Del. – The Le Moyne women's soccer team earned a point in the Northeast Conference Standings on Thursday after recording a 0-0 draw against Delaware State.

The Dolphins tallied a season-high 14 shots against the Hornets at DSU's Drass Field.

Graduate goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) recorded five saves as the Le Moyne defense registered its second clean sheet through three conference games.

Le Moyne had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1, and outshot the Hornets by a tally of 8-1 during the first 45 minutes.

"We definitely came out of this game with mixed feelings," said Le Moyne head coach Jaro Zawislan after the match. "The group was disappointed not to get three points out of this game considering all the chances that we created throughout. However, we cannot dismiss a very good performance by our team.

"That was the first game at the Division I level where we felt, for a majority of the game, we generated very good momentum and, especially in the second half with the high press, we were able to keep the ball for long periods of time in the attacking third. In spite of not getting three points, it's still one point on the road, and a shutout. It is a quick turnaround to the next conference game on Sunday against Wagner. We are going to keep improving on the defensive side of the ball, and we are going to spend more time working on the final pass in the attacking third and improving our finishing," Zawislan added.

In the 11th minute, sophomore defender Jasmina Barhoumi (Worms, Germany/Nelly-Sachs-IGS) took a Le Moyne free kick from the left side of the field and sent a dangerous ball into the box, but Delaware State goalkeeper Ashley Maribo stepped up and caught the ball in traffic to put an end to the threat.

With just over 32 minutes remaining in the first half, Barhoumi took a corner kick from the right flag and sent a cross into the box. Redshirt-junior defender Danielle Casey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) went after the header, and the ball fell to the feet of sophomore midfielder Lindsey LeBlanc (Westminster, Mass./St. Bernard's) who hit a volley on goal that was saved by Maribo.

In the 32nd minute, sophomore forward Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) dribbled up the left wing, then cut to her right into the penalty area and smashed a right-footed shot that was on target but caught by the goalkeeper.

The Dolphins held an 8-1 advantage in shots after 45 minutes of action.

The 'Phins kicked off to begin the second half, and in the opening moments the ball was sent backwards to Barhoumi, who drove it in the air up the field. Junior forward Sierra Edwards (Greece, N.Y./Hilton/Monroe) sprinted after the bouncing ball. At the edge of the 18-yard box, with a DSU defender about to clear the it away, Edwards lunged at the ball and poked a right-footed shot that took two bounces towards the goal line before hitting the right post and rolling out of bounds for a goal kick.

"Coming out of halftime we had a very good level of intensity and urgency and that resulted in sustained attack for our team," said Zawislan.

In the 48th minute, Le Moyne took a throw in from the right sideline, and three Dolphins headed the ball in succession towards the center of the penalty area, where junior defender/midfielder Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) hit the ball out of the air and redirected it on goal, but Maribo was there to make the save.

In the 51st minute, Wilson ripped a left-footed shot in the left side of the box that deflected off a DSU defender and hit the crossbar. The ball dropped down to the edge of the six-yard box, and Le Moyne took multiple kicks at the ball in the scramble for possession, but the 'Phins were unable to hit the back of the net.

With just under 30 minutes remaining in the second half, DSU's Jada McCullough put a low shot on target that was saved by Moreau.

In the 73rd minute, McCullough drilled a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that was aimed for the top of the Le Moyne goal, but Moreau left her feet and got just enough of the ball to deflect it off the crossbar and record her fifth save of the match.

In the 80th minute, Wilson earned a free kick in the left side of Le Moyne's attacking third, and Barhoumi sent a cross towards the far post on the set piece, but it was knocked away by Maribo.

With 7:10 left in the second half, sophomore defender Lara Lobe (Trebnje, Slovenia/Gymnasium Novo mesto) sent a dangerous ball into the box from the right side of Le Moyne's attacking third, but the pass skipped across the penalty area and Maribo went to ground to scoop it up.

The Dolphins kept the ball pinned in Delaware State's defensive half for much of the final 45 minutes, but they were unable to find the winning goal.

"Short of scoring the goal, which is very important, the team did everything needed to get a win on the road," said Zawislan. "It's a game of inches, and a couple of inches was the difference between a tie and a win today, a couple of close calls."

Le Moyne freshman Liz Ramsey (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) made her first career start during the match.

The Dolphins now have four points in the conference standings, and will return home for an NEC match against Wagner on Sunday at Ted Grant Field at 2:00 p.m.
