MEET THE 'PHINS: VOLLEYBALL SOPHOMORE HALEY GERKEN

Name: Haley Gerken

Sport: Volleyball

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Buffalo, N.Y.

What is your major? Psychology - Occupational Therapy Pathway

What do you want to do after graduation and why? I want to be a GA for the volleyball team and get my masters. After that I would like to work as an OT in a school and coach there as well because I like making an impact on kids lives.

Why did you choose Le Moyne? I chose Le Moyne for the good academics as well as the strong athletics. I felt at home as soon as I stepped on campus. The welcoming feel was something I didn't feel at other schools.

What would you tell somebody that is considering coming to Le Moyne? I met some of my best friends here. Going to a small school is nice because you get to know all your classmates and professors.

If you could play another position, what position would you play and why? I would play libero because I love defense and making a play to save the point.

If you could choose any opponent for Le Moyne to play that is currently not on the schedule, who would you choose and why? My first choice would be Davidson because my best friend plays there, but we are actually playing them in preseason which I am stoked about. Other than Davidson I would like to play University at Buffalo because it is close to home and my former coaches as well as my family could come watch me play.

Favorite class at Le Moyne and why? My favorite class is psychology because I find it super interesting and all the psych professors are awesome.

Hardest class at Le Moyne and why? Chemistry because there is a lot of homework and the labs are long. You have to do a lot of work outside of class to succeed.

Favorite professor at Le Moyne and why? Dr. Ryan from the English department because she is so funny and an amazing teacher. She keeps it real and she is very passionate about what she does.

Favorite form of social media and why? Tiktok, there is some funny stuff on there.

Favorite person to follow on social media and why? Taylor Swift. No explanation needed.

If you could have dinner with any 4 people at Le Moyne who would you choose and why? There are so many great people on campus I don't think I can pick just 4.

Favorite sport to follow at Le Moyne outside of yours and why? Lacrosse and basketball, my room-mates are on the lacrosse team and a couple of my other friends are on the basketball team.

If you didn't play your sport at Le Moyne, what sport would you play and why? Basketball for sure, I grew up in a gym with my dad coaching so I have always been surrounded by basketball my whole life.

What song is playing on your headphones in the locker room right before taking the field/court/pool/course? Pound The Alarm by Nicki Minaj.

What is your dream vacation? I want to go to Aruba.

What is the best thing about being in the Northeast Conference? The competition.

Favorite quote from your coach All adversity and disappointment is an OPPORTUNITY to make something positive. I think our team would say that our favorite quote from Coach Susan Kim is "Yes I accept the job offer as the Le Moyne Women's Volleyball Coach."

One word to describe a Le Moyne (your sport) player Resilient.

Who will be the surprise player on your team in 2023-24 and why? This is a tough question but I think the incoming freshmen are going to bring some heat.

What player epitomizes Le Moyne (your sport) and why? Nil epitomizes Le Moyne Volleyball because she is such a hard worker and she has had to overcome so many challenges. She is so kind and everyone on campus LOVES Nil.

Who will be the Most Valuable Player on your team in 2023-24? Also another tough question, maybe I will have an answer after preseason. Having experienced what we have gone through in the last 12 months is motivating us all to be the best versions of ourselves so that we can dominate as a team and make Le Moyne proud of this program.

What are you most looking forward to in 2023-24? Playing for a new coach and challenging ourselves at the Division 1 level is super exciting. I also can't wait to play in some big arenas and travel with my team.
