Syracuse, N.Y. – Women's soccer sophomore defender
Jasmina Barhoumi (Worms, Germany/Nelly-Sachs-IGS) helped the Tunisia Senior National Team qualify for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations with a win and a draw against Congo in November and December.
Barhoumi's Tunisia side bested the Congo national football team in Tunisia by a score of 5-2, then the two sides traveled to Congo for the second leg of the matchup.
The contest in Congo ended in a 1-1 draw, which confirmed Tunisia's qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations.
"It means a lot to me to get the chance to represent my country and also Le Moyne in an international competition," said Barhoumi. "I am really thankful for the opportunity and hope I can inspire others to fight for their dreams. In total, the whole (Tunisia) team is really happy and excited to qualify for the Africa Cup, since it is the biggest tournament for African countries."
During the first qualifying game between the two sides, Tunisia held a 3-0 advantage at halftime and extended their lead to 5-0 in the 53
rd minute before Congo scored the final two goals of the match in the 56
th and 86
th minutes.
Both squads then traveled south to the Republic of the Congo for a second match. Congo took a 1-0 lead in that game, but Tunisia found the equalizer in the 78
th minute.
Tunisia previously bested Niger in the first round of tournament qualification in September.
"We knew it would be tough to win in Congo, since the change in weather was substantial and hard to adjust to," said Barhoumi. "So we were mentally prepared for a tough game but after the game everyone was just happy and all the concerns vanished. We celebrated together that night and explored Congo the next day before we headed back to Tunisia," Barhoumi added.
During her first season with Le Moyne in 2023, Barhoumi played every minute of every match, tallying two goals and three assists to finish the campaign tied for the team lead in points.
She helped the Dolphins record their first shutout of the season and capture the program's first-ever Northeast Conference victory in a 1-0 win at home over Stonehill on September 21, and she provided a career-best two assists during a 2-2 NEC draw at Central Connecticut State on October 15.
Barhoumi previously competed for the Tunisia Senior Women's National Team at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as the 2021 Arab Women's Cup.
The 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations will be played in Morocco, which also hosted the tournament in 2022.
