UTRGV USES LATE RUN TO PULL AWAY FROM MEN’S BASKETBALL

Edinburg, Texas – DK Thorn registered 24 points to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to a 97-77 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Monday night at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Graduate student guard Robby Carmody (Mars, Pa./Mars Area/Notre Dame/Mercer) and redshirt junior forward Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) each scored 14 points, including 10 points each in the second half, while Koroma added eight rebounds and five assists, his most against an NCAA program. Junior guard Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) tallied 10 points and three rebounds off the bench.

Thorn led five Vaqueros in double figures with his game-high point total, 20 of which came in the second half, while adding five rebounds and four assists. Howie Fleming Jr. tallied 18 points in his first start of the year, while adding three steals. Cliff Davis drained five first-half three-pointers and finished the game with 17 points. Trey Miller turned in 15 points and four assists off the bench, while K.T. Raimey had 13 points, including 11 in the second half, four rebounds and three steals.

After the teams traded spurts over the opening seven minutes of the game, resulting in a 9-8 advantage for the Vaqueros, UTRGV rattled off nine straight points for its first double-digit lead of the game. Thorn made a pair of jumpers around a lay-up by Raimey before Davis hit his first three-pointer for an 18-8 lead with 10:29 to go.

The Dolphins closed within six on four occasions over the next seven and one-half minutes, but the Vaqueros had an answer each time as their lead bounced between six and nine points.

After Davis hit his fourth three-pointer of the half, junior guard Zek Tekin (Istanbul, Turkey/Ozel Esenkent Okaynus Anadolu Lisesi/Siena) and redshirt sophomore forward Nate Fouts (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles/Kimball Union Academy) each scored 26 seconds apart in the paint to get the Dolphins within 36-31 with 1:26 left in the stanza.

The Vaqueros scored the final five points of the half to take a 41-31 lead into the intermission. Tommy Gankhuyag made a lay-up and then Davis buried his final three-pointer in transition with 46 seconds left.

After Le Moyne scored the first two points of the second half, UTRGV scored eight of the next 10 points to take its first 14-point lead of the game. Thorn made a lay-up and a three-pointer and then Raimey nailed a three-pointer.

Following a lay-up by Fleming Jr. prior to the under-16 media timeout, the Dolphins rattled off 17 of the next 22 points to cut their deficit to just two, 56-54, with 11:24 left. Fifth-year guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) drained a three-pointer, Koroma had a dunk and a lay-up, Carmody made three free throws, Tekin and Mosquera converted lay-ups and then Carmody drilled a three-pointer.

The teams split the next 20 points over a span of 4:39 as UTRGV was able to push out to a five-point advantage three times, but Mosquera buried a three-pointer after the third time.

Thorn and Raimey followed with three-pointers to give momentum back to the Vaqueros.

Senior forward Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) made a lay-up to get the Dolphins back within six for the final time, but the Vaqueros tallied 23 of the next 31 points to take their largest lead of the game, 95-74, with 26 seconds left. Fleming Jr. had seven points in the span, while Raimey and Thorn each had five and Miller had four.

The teams combined to make five free throws over the final 26 seconds to close out the game's scoring.

Le Moyne (2-6), which drops to 2-5 against teams from the state of Texas and to 3-2 in games in Texas, returns north to visit Manhattan University on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
