Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) led four Dolphins in double digits as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team held on for an 81-77 victory over Manhattan University on Friday evening at Draddy Gymnasium.
Owens registered a season-best 18 points, including 14 in the first half, a Le Moyne career high-tying nine rebounds, including six in the first half, and a Le Moyne career-high six assists. Redshirt junior forward
Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) tallied 15 of his 17 points in the second half, while adding five rebounds and five assists in 22 foul-plagued minutes. Junior guard
Zek Tekin (Istanbul, Turkey/Ozel Esenkent Okaynus Anadolu Lisesi/Siena) recorded 16 points, a career-high eight assists, five rebounds and three steals, while graduate student guard
Robby Carmody (Mars, Pa./Mars Area/Notre Dame/Mercer) posted 16 points and three steals. The Dolphins registered a .604 field goal percentage (32-of-53), the team's highest mark since a .608 mark (31-of-51) against American International on February 9, 2019.
Will Sydnor led the Jaspers in the setback with 20 points and six rebounds. Shaquil Bender and Jaden Winston each scored 13 points, while Bender had five rebounds and Winston had six assists. Wesley Robinson and Devin Dinkins each posted 12 points, while Robinson grabbed seven rebounds.
Following five ties over the opening 6:47 of the game, the Dolphins took the lead for good with the next nine points. Tekin scored the first three points of the span and the final two as Le Moyne took a 20-11 lead with 8:56 left.
The Jaspers answered back with the next six points to get within three for the final time until the closing minutes. Robinson had the first two points and then Dinkins had a four-point play with 8:26 to go.
Le Moyne's lead bounced between five and seven points over the next three minutes before Bender made a lay-up with 3:47 left to get the Jaspers within 28-24.
The Dolphins closed out the half with 10 of the final 12 points to take a 38-26 lead into the intermission. Owens had the first four points, Koroma made a lay-up and then Owens scored the final four points.
After Manhattan scored the first four points of the second half, the Dolphins ran off 13 of the next 18 points to take their largest lead of the game. Koroma scored the first six points, Carmody made a three-pointer and then Koroma scored four more points for a 16-point lead with 13:31 left.
Fraser Roxburgh followed with a lay-up and Bender drained a three-pointer to pull the Jaspers within 11 with 11:49 left.
After the teams alternated points over the next minute, Masiah Gilyard made a lay-up and Robinson connected on a three-pointer to get Manhattan within 57-49.
Le Moyne pushed its lead back to 12 on a pair of occasions over the next three minutes, with the final time coming on a lay-up by Carmody with 7:01 left for a 69-57 advantage.
Manhattan cut its deficit in half with seven of the next eight points over almost two minutes. Dinkins had five points around two free throws from Bender.
The Dolphins pushed the margin back to eight twice, the last of which came on two free throws by Owens with 2:47 remaining.
Sydnor and Robinson drained three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to pull the Jaspers within 76-74 with 1:42 left.
Following a timeout, sophomore guard
AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) drained a step-back three-pointer from the right wing with 1:12 left to push the lead back to five.
Manhattan missed four three-pointers and committed a turnover around a missed free throw by the Dolphins and a Le Moyne turnover over the next minute.
After another missed free throw by the Dolphins, Dinkins drilled a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to make it 79-77.
Following a Manhattan timeout, Carmody drew a foul and converted two foul shots with nine seconds to go.
The Jaspers got off a three-pointer with two seconds left, but was off the mark.
Le Moyne (3-6), which beat the Jaspers for the first time in seven all-time meetings (the teams met each year in Syracuse between 1952 and 1957), plays at home for the first time in 24 days on Tuesday against Army West Point at 7:00 p.m.
