MEN’S BASKETBALL USES THREE-POINT BARRAGE TO DEFEAT SUNY DELHI, 106-51

Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman guard Jakob Blakley (Elgin, Ill./Walter Payton Preparatory) drained a freshman-record eight three-pointers to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 106-51 victory over SUNY Delhi on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Blakley finished the game with 28 points (six more than he accumulated in his first eight career appearances) on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, including 8-of-12 from three-point range, while adding career-bests of five rebounds and three steals. The eight three-pointers put him in an eight-way tie for the second-most in a game by a Dolphin in the program's history, are the most-ever by a Dolphin in a home game and are the most since Chris Johnson '12 made eight at Pace on February 16, 2011. There were six Dolphins on eight occasions who made seven three-pointers in a home game, the most recent of which was Ryan Roland '20 against Saint Anselm on January 25, 2020.

As a team, the Dolphins connected on 20 three-pointers, the second-most in a game in the program's history (trailing 21 against Chestnut Hill at Saint Rose on 11/10/19) and the most-ever in a home game. The previous-most in a home game was 18 against Saint Francis University last January.

Graduate student guard Robby Carmody (Mars, Pa./Mars Area/Notre Dame/Mercer) tallied 14 points, his most in a home game as a Dolphin, in just 10 minutes of action. Freshman forward Isaac Nyakundi (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East/The MacDuffie School (Mass.)) turned in 11 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench, while redshirt sophomore forward Nate Fouts (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles/Kimball Union Academy) had 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.

Lester McCarthy led the Broncos in the loss with 16 points.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first 12 points on back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore guard AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and back-to-back three-pointers by Carmody.

After the teams split the next 16 points over a span of six minutes, the Dolphins used a 12-3 spurt to take their first 20-point lead of the game. Nyakundi had the first six points, Fouts drained a three-pointer and then fifth-year guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) drilled a three-pointer for a 32-11 lead with 8:05 left.

Following alternating points over the next three minutes, the Dolphins took their first 30-point lead with a 12-2 burst. Jones Jr. started the run with a three-pointer, redshirt junior forward Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) had consecutive lay-ups, Nyakundi answered a Delhi basket with a dunk and then redshirt freshman guard Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) buried his first career three-pointer.

Delhi scored four of the last six points of the half to pull within 56-26 at the intermission.

The Broncos opened the second half with the first five points as Noah Colin made a lay-up and McCarthy had a conventional three-point play.

Le Moyne answered with 11 straight points to regain control of the game. Carmody made a lay-up, junior guard Zek Tekin (Istanbul, Turkey/Ozel Esenkent Okaynus Anadolu Lisesi/Siena) had a dunk off a steal, Jones Jr. had a transition dunk, Carmody buried a three-pointer and then Blakley made a lay-up for a 67-31 advantage with 15:38 left.

After the teams traded points over the two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins scored six points in a row for their first 40-point lead. Dancler made a foul shot, Fouts converted a lay-up and then Blakley drilled a three-pointer.

Following a three-pointer by Delhi's Omotola Oladeji to get the Broncos within 85-45 with 7:17 left, the Dolphins rattled off 17 of the next 19 points over four and one-half minutes. Blakley led the run with five three-pointers around a fast-break lay-up from redshirt sophomore guard Kaelin Thomas (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic).

Each team scored four points over the final two and one-half minutes to close out the game.

Le Moyne (4-8) returns to the hardwood on Wednesday at Dartmouth College at 11:00 a.m.
