AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) tallied a career-best 20 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 80-76 victory over Dartmouth College on Wednesday at Leede Arena.
Dancler split his point total evenly between the two halves and connected on a career-high 8-of-12 shots, including a career-best 4-of-6 three-pointers, while adding three rebounds. Graduate student guard
Robby Carmody (Mars, Pa./Mars Area/Notre Dame/Mercer) and redshirt sophomore forward
Nate Fouts (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles/Kimball Union Academy) each recorded 13 points, while Carmody had three rebounds and two steals and Fouts posted five rebounds and three assists. Junior guard
Zek Tekin (Istanbul, Turkey/Ozel Esenkent Okaynus Anadolu Lisesi/Siena) tallied 12 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals. Fifth-year guard
Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) and redshirt junior forward
Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) each registered 10 points, while Koroma grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Ryan Cornish matched Dancler for game-high scoring honors, while adding five assists. Brandon Mitchell-Day recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals. Connor Amundsen turned in 13 points, three assists and three rebounds.
After the teams split the first 14 points of the game, Dancler made a jumper and a three-pointer to give the Dolphins their first five-point lead of the game.
The Big Green pulled within three on a pair of occasions, but Fouts responded with a basket in the paint and a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 19-11 advantage with 11:01 remaining.
Dartmouth countered with 12 consecutive points to take its largest lead of the game. Cade Haskins started the run with back-to-back three-pointers, Jackson Munro made a lay-up to tie the score, Cornish hit a jumper for the lead and then Amundsen capped the streak with a jumper.
The Dolphins answered with eight straight points to regain the lead. Jones Jr. ignited the run with a three-pointer and then Carmody made a lay-up and a three-pointer for a 27-23 lead with 6:21 left.
After Fouts made a lay-up to push Le Moyne's lead to 33-28 with 3:19 left, the Big Green connected on seven free throws over four possessions to take a 35-33 edge with 1:32 to go.
The Dolphins scored the final four points of the half to take a 37-35 lead into the intermission. Tekin made a lay-up and then Jones followed with one with 28 seconds left.
The teams went back and forth over the opening five and one-half minutes of the second half as Le Moyne's lead bounced between one and five points.
After Cameron McNamee drilled a three-pointer to get the Big Green within one, the Dolphins scored four straight points. Carmody made a foul shot and then Koroma recorded a conventional three-point play for a 53-48 lead with 13:43 left.
The Big Green responded with five points to knot the score at 53 with 12:00 remaining. Mitchell-Day made a lay-up and then Cornish had a conventional three-point play.
Following three-pointers by Jones Jr. and Cornish, Fouts, Dancler and freshman guard
Jakob Blakley (Elgin, Ill./Walter Payton Preparatory) made shots to put the Dolphins back up by six with just over eight minutes left.
Dartmouth countered with 10 of the next 14 points to even the score for the final time. Cornish made a three-pointer, Amundsen converted two foul shots, Mitchell-Day made a lay-up, Munro made two free throws and then Mitchell-Day tied the score with a free throw with 3:49 remaining.
Carmody put the Dolphins up for good with a three-pointer with 2:16 to play and then Fouts made two free throws with 1:41 left.
Cornish made a jumper and a three-pointer around a three-pointer by Dancler to get the Big Green within three with 33 seconds left.
After Tekin made four free throws around a lay-up by Mitchell-Day, Amundsen drilled a three-pointer to get Dartmouth within 78-76 with five seconds left.
Carmody closed out the scoring with two free throws with 1.6 seconds left.
Le Moyne (5-8) returns to action on Sunday at the University of Notre Dame at 6:00 p.m.
