Williamsville, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team claimed its second straight victory, 4-3, over Niagara Univeristy on Sunday afternoon at the Village Glen Tennis Courts.
The Dolphins earned the point in the doubles competition for the fourth time this season. At the second position, junior
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and graduate student
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) defeated Elena Mayet and Jaida Borg, 7-5. Sophomores
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) and
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) also tallied a 7-5 win at the third spot over Enrica Favaron and Larisa Kotok. Coral Rodriguez and Gabriela Melo prevented the sweep with a 6-1 win at the first position over freshman
Lilia Raiss (Temara, Morocco/Descartes) and sophomore
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences).
Le Moyne captured the match by winning three of the positions in the singles competition. Barona blanked Borg at the fourth spot, 6-0, 6-0. Simeonova was victorious at the fifth position against Mercedes Velasco, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Lilliegren registered a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 win at the sixth spot over Favaron. Mayet downed Casares at the first position, 6-4, 6-2. Rodriguez claimed a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1, win at the second spot over Raiss. Melo posted a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over Alvarez at the third position.
Le Moyne (4-4) takes on Bucknell University next Sunday at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
