Radford, Va. – The Le Moyne College baseball team claimed their second extra-inning victory of the season on Friday, besting the Radford University Highlanders in game one of the weekend series by a score of 8-6 in 10 innings. The Highlanders bounced back with a 19-2 win in the second half of Friday's doubleheader to even the series at 1-1.
The two sides will play the final game of the non-conference series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Le Moyne and Radford were initially scheduled to play one game on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday's weather forecast forced the two teams to play two nine-inning contests on Friday.
Game one of Friday's doubleheader was the second-ever meeting between the two programs. Le Moyne bested Radford by a score of 5-0 in March of the 1991 season.
Game One:
Le Moyne tallied 13 hits compared to eight for Radford during the first half of the doubleheader.
Fifth-year shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded a game-high three runs batted in with a single, a double, a walk and a stolen base. Graduate first baseman
Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) registered a game-high three hits in addition to two runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base, while sophomore right fielder
Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) scored a game-high three runs with two hits, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Sophomore third baseman
Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) provided two hits, two RBI and a run scored, and senior left fielder
Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) added two hits, including a triple and two runs scored, including the go-ahead run in the top of the 10
th on a sacrifice fly from Keneston.
Senior left-handed pitcher
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) started on the mound for the 'Phins and allowed six hits, four runs, and four walks with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings, recording his second no-decision in as many starts this season.
Redshirt-junior right-hander
Billy Hoffacker (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek/Rowan College of South Jersey) tossed 3.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits and two runs with a strikeout. After Le Moyne reclaimed the lead in the top of the 10
th, Hoffacker recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the frame to earn his first victory of the season and secure Le Moyne's second win of the campaign.
Center fielder Cameron Pittman, catcher Drew Biggerstaff and shortstop Hunter Keen each recorded two hits for the Highlanders, and five different Radford players recorded an RBI. Pittman launched a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, and he finished the contest with a team-high two runs scored.
Radford starting pitcher Scott Rouse tallied nine strikeouts with five hits, two runs and one walk allowed in 6.0 innings of work.
Radford took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Designated hitter Zack Whitacre drew a walk with two outs and nobody on base, then he stole second during the next at bat, and crossed the plate after first baseman Carson Bell deposited a base hit to right field. Biggerstaff then drove in Bell with a double to center field.
In both the second and third frames, Parker stranded a runner in scoring position with inning-ending strikeouts.
Radford extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth.
Keneston led off the top of the sixth inning with an infield single, then Roden moved him to third base with a single to right.
Roden stole second base to give the 'Phins two runners in scoring position, then Nevins hammered a double to right field to drive in both runners and cut Le Moyne's deficit to 3-2.
Parker retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth, then he allowed a walk, but picked off the runner during the next at bat to end the inning.
Boule led off the top of the seventh with a triple, then Sullivan drove him with a double to left field.
With one out in the inning, Roden doubled to drive in Sullivan and give the Dolphins their first lead of the contest.
An RBI single from Nevins with two outs in the inning gave Le Moyne a 5-3 advantage.
Pittman's solo home run in the seventh cut Le Moyne's lead in half, but Parker got a flyout, a strikeout and a groundout to end his day's work and keep Le Moyne in front after seven innings.
With two outs and nobody on base in the top of the eighth, Sullivan ripped a single to center field, then he came around to score as Keneston hammered a double to right field, making it 6-4 in favor of the Dolphins.
Radford got a run back in the bottom of the eighth. Left fielder Ben Williams drew a leadoff walk, stole two bases and scored on an infield single by Keen.
Le Moyne catcher
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) threw out Keen trying to steal second, and Hoffacker got a flyout to end the inning.
Pittman led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to left field, then second baseman Conner Butler moved him over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Whitacre hit a ground ball to the left side that allowed Pittman to score and tie the game at 6-6.
Boule provided his second leadoff hit of the game, this time a single to left field, in the top of the 10
th. He then advanced to third base on two consecutive wild pitches. Sullivan drew a walk and stole second base to give Le Moyne runners on second and third with nobody out.
Keneston stepped to the plate and lifted a fly ball to center field, which allowed Boule to tag up and score, putting Le Moyne back in front, 7-6. Following a pitching change, Roden ripped a single to right field to drive in Sullivan and give the 'Phins an insurance run.
Hoffacker got back-to-back flyouts and a groundout in the bottom of the 10
th to secure the win.
The Dolphins recorded just one extra-inning victory in 2023, which was their opening game of NCAA Championship East Regional #2. Through six games in 2024, Le Moyne has claimed two wins in extra innings.
Game Two:
Le Moyne allowed 12 walks during the second half of the doubleheader, the most walks that they have allowed in a game since the 2022 campaign.
Radford starting pitcher Dylan Howard earned his first win of the season after recording 11 strikeouts with five hits and two runs allowed in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Highlanders scored a run in the first, another in the second, and two more in the third to open up a 4-0 lead early on in game two.
Nevins got Le Moyne on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to right field, his first long ball of the season. Through six games Nevins has a team-high eight hits. The home run was Le Moyne's second as a team this season, as
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) launched a solo home run in the season opener at Houston Christian.
Radford scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to establish a 10-1 lead.
The Dolphins got their second run of the game in the fifth. Freshman second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) led off the inning with a base hit up the middle, then he moved to second base following a single through the right side from Boule.
Both runners advanced a base on a Sullivan ground ball, then Keneston grounded out to second base to drive in Whelehan.
Le Moyne freshman left-handed pitcher
Max Danaher (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) delivered scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth frames.
Radford added seven runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh.
Le Moyne freshman infielder/outfielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) recorded his first career hit in the top of the eighth with a double to right field.

Bobby Trigilio (Chicopee, Mass./Pope Francis) recorded a single through the left side in the top of the ninth.
