Trenton, N.J. – Albert Serrano scored three runs, including the go-ahead run, to lead Wagner College to an 8-7 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team in Northeast Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
The Seahawks struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Right fielder Lukas Torres reached on a fielder's choice in which the first out was recorded and then stole second base. After Serrano walked and Mateo Matthews singled to third to load the bases, Torres scored on a sacrifice fly to the second baseman. Catcher Xavier Ulrich then singled to center to drive in Serrano.
Le Moyne took the lead with three runs in the top of the third. After fifth year centerfielder
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) doubled down the left field line with one out and graduate student first baseman
Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) singled to the shortstop, shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) blasted a three-run homer to right field.
Wagner regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame with two runs. After Torres was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Serrano launched a home run to left center to put the Seahawks up 4-3.
The Dolphins answered with a run in the top of the fourth to even the score at four apiece as junior right fielder
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) led off with a home run to left center.
The Seahawks took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Serrano and Matthews opened the frame with singles. After they each advanced a base on a wild pitch in between outs, second baseman Chris Conniff singled through the right side to plate Serrano. Third baseman Cole Kumpf then singled through the left side to knock in Matthews.
Wagner tacked on two runs in the sixth. Torres was hit by a pitch to start the inning, advanced to second on a one-out single by Matthews and then took third as designated hitter Diego Tavares was hit by a pitch. Ulrich then singled up the middle to drive in Torres and Matthews.
Le Moyne began chipping away at its deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh. Roden singled up the middle with one out, advanced to second on a balk, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch. After an out, junior catcher
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) drilled a home run to left field to make it 8-6.
The Dolphins cut their margin in half with a run in the eighth. Patchett reached on a fielding error by the center fielder to start the inning and moved to second on a single down the left field line by freshman second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton). After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base, Brush lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Patchett. The next batter struck out to end the inning.
Senior
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) suffered the loss after yielding six runs and 10 hits over five innings, while striking out four. Roden led Le Moyne's 11-hit attack with three hits to go with two runs scored, while Brush and Ries each had two hits. Connor Hayden earned the win on the mound for the Seahawks after striking out six over six innings, while allowing four runs and seven hits. Alec Burnett earned his fifth save of the year after tossing the final two innings and yielding an unearned run.
Le Moyne (14-19, 9-10 NEC) completes the three-game series with the Seahawks on Sunday at Trenton Thunder Ballpark at 12:00 p.m.
