Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of a Sunday doubleheader against Stonehill College at Dick Rockwell Field to claim their second consecutive Northeast Conference series victory.
After losing game one of the series on Saturday, Le Moyne won game two with the help of a two-run walk-off home run from
Dewey Roden in the bottom of the ninth in the first half of Sunday's doubleheader, then the 'Phins won the series finale by a score of 9-3 as freshman infielder
Mike Whelehan recorded a game-high three RBI and redshirt-junior right-hander
Jordan Goldmann tallied his fourth NEC win on the mound after completing 7.0 innings of work.
"Great bounce back day after Saturday's loss," said Le Moyne head coach
Scott Cassidy '98. "We got some good pitching today and some clutch hits. None bigger than Dewey's walk-off home run. That was such a huge moment that changed the momentum for the rest of the day."
Game One:
Whelehan provided a season-best three hits with two RBI and two runs scored during the first half of Sunday's doubleheader, while senior catcher
Brady Fureno tied his career-high with three hits, and senior shortstop
Nick Nevins added two hits and an RBI.
Junior left-handed starting pitcher
Jacob Crystal started on the mound for the Dolphins and tallied six strikeouts with four hits and four runs allowed in 6.0 innings.
Redshirt-junior right-hander
Billy Hoffacker pitched the final 3.0 innings and was credited with his third win of the season after Roden's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Le Moyne broke the 0-0 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third. Senior outfielder
Jason Boule led off the inning with a double down the left field line, then Whelehan drove him in with a base hit up the middle. Senior outfielder
Zach Brush drove in Whelehan with a single to center field, then a Nevins base hit to right drove in Brush later in the inning.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning. Stonehill senior third baseman Trey Ciulla-Hall doubled to lead off the top of the fourth, moved to third on a groundout during the next at bat, then came home to score after senior catcher Blaine Lidsky lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
Fureno led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the left field line, then with two outs in the inning Whelehan delivered another RBI base hit to center field.
Stonehill tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth as junior outfielder Taylor Gaspar led off the inning with a home run, then Ciulla-Hall delivered a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI double later in the inning.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth, when graduate outfielder Conor Kiely ripped a single through the left side of the Le Moyne infield to drive in pinch runner Evan Dieter with two outs.
With one out and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth, Whelehan recorded his third hit of the game with a single to right field. After Stonehill reliever Jimmy Gilleran recorded a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Roden swung at the first pitch he saw and drove the ball over the left-center field wall to record his second home run of the season, and his first career walk-off home run.
The last time the Dolphins won a game via a walk-off home run was on April 27 of last season when
Brody Keneston lifted a grand slam over the left field wall in the bottom of the ninth against Adelphi to give Le Moyne an 8-6 win.
Game Two:
In the final contest of the three-game conference series, the score was tied 3-3 through four innings, then the Dolphins tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Junior catcher
Benji Ries, Fureno and Keneston hit three consecutive singles with one out in the fifth, then an error during the next at bat on a ball hit towards the left side of the infield allowed two runs to cross the plate. With two outs in the inning, Whelehan smacked a single up the middle that knocked in Keneston and junior outfielder
Wyatt Patchett.
Le Moyne scored the final two runs of the game as Patchett launched a two-run home run over the right field wall, his second long ball of the season. Patchett registered three runs, two hits and two RBI during the win, which improved Le Moyne's conference record to 8-6, while Keneston scored a season-high three runs and hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning.
Goldmann now holds a 4-0 record in NEC play. Freshman left-hander
Max Danaher held the Skyhawks to two hits and zero runs in the final two innings.
During the second half of the doubleheader,
Nick Nevins made his 215
th career start as a Dolphin, which set a program record. He also holds the program record for most games played.
Kiely, Ciulla-Hall and shortstop Jack Marshall each recorded two hits for Stonehill in the series finale, second baseman Dylan Zemotel drove in a team-high two runs, and redshirt-sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Peter Haas recorded eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
