2004 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM TO BE RECOGNIZED SUNDAY DURING DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

5/24/2024 12:03:00 PM

Syracuse, N.Y. – The 2004 national championship-winning Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team will be recognized by the NCAA on Sunday at halftime of the Division II men's lacrosse national championship game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Each year, the NCAA invites the Division II and III men's lacrosse national champion from 20 years prior for an on-field recognition to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of their Championship during halftime of their respective national championship games on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend and the Division I national champion from 25 years prior to commemorate the 25-year anniversary during halftime of the championship game on Memorial Day. Le Moyne (2004 Division II) and Salisbury (2004 Division III) will be recognized on Sunday and Virginia (1999 Division I) will be honored on Monday.

The 2004 men's lacrosse team cruised through the regular season and NE10 tournament with a perfect 14-0 record, outscoring their opponents 229 to 67. The dominating season earned the team a home game in the NCAA semifinals for the second straight year, where they defeated New York Tech, 7-5, to earn a berth in the program's first national championship game. In front of over 19,000 fans at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium, Limestone entered the final seconds of the fourth quarter with a 10-9 advantage. Le Moyne forced a turnover, allowing junior attackman Brandon Spillett an opportunity with nine seconds left. Dodging to the cage, Spillett slipped the game-tying goal past the Limestone goalie to send the game to overtime. Following a scoreless first overtime period, the Dolphins won the opening faceoff of the second period and capped the remarkable season with another goal by Spillett, his seventh goal of the game, to capture the College's first national championship. The national championship also marked the first by a men's program (regardless of sport) in the Northeast-10 Conference's history.

The Dolphins finished the year 16-0 and became just the third undefeated Division II national champion. The team featured four all-Americans, including Midfielder of the Year Rob Trowbridge, and eight all-conference selections, including the Defensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year. Three members of the team have since been inducted into the Le Moyne College Gold Wave Hall of Fame.
