BASEBALL LAUNCHES COMBINED 10 HOME RUNS TO TAKE BOTH GAMES OF DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST UMES

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of its doubleheader against University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday at Dick Rockwell Field to begin a three-game Northeast Conference series against the Hawks.

The Dolphins held an 8-0 lead after eight innings in game one before hanging on for an 8-4 win, then they tied a single game program record with eight home runs in game two on their way to a 20-8 win in the nightcap.

Le Moyne's 20 runs in game two is tied for the most scored in a single game by a Le Moyne team since the 2014 season.

Le Moyne first baseman Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) went a combined 6-for-6 with five runs scored, three home runs and eight runs batted in during the two victories. He registered his first career multi-home run game in the second half of the doubleheader with a solo home run in the first inning and a three-run home run in the fourth.

During the second half of the doubleheader, shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored to tie his career highs in both categories, while center fielder Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) recorded his first multi-home run game with a two-run home in the second inning, and another two-run shot in the third to finish the contest with three hits, three runs and four RBI.

Third baseman Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) recorded a career-high three hits and a season-best three RBIs in game two, while right fielder Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) added two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Both Sullivan and Patchett homered during the 20-8 win.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth in game two, outfielder Michael Rockwell (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded his first career hit, home run and RBI with a single swing as he launched a two-run home run over the left field wall, bringing in classmate James Musso (Auburn, N.Y./Skaneateles), who scored his first career run on the play.

Starting left-handed pitcher Jacob Crystal (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) earned his second win of the season in game one for the Dolphins, limiting the Hawks to three hits, two runs and three walks with a season and career-high-tying eight strikeouts. For his second consecutive start, Crystal carried a shutout to the ninth inning, but UMES third baseman Ulysses Luciano launched a two-run home run in the top of the ninth against Crystal to give the Hawks their first runs of the afternoon.

Right-handers Kennen Smith (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) and Billy Hoffacker (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek/Rowan College of South Jersey) combined to get the final three outs for the Dolphins in game one.

Left-hander Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) started game two on the mound for Le Moyne and improved his record to 3-3 after allowing three hits, one run and three walks with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.

Lefty Max Danaher (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and right-hander Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) appeared in relief to close out the doubleheader.

Le Moyne led 3-0 midway through the seventh inning in game one, then a two-run home run from Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) in the bottom of the seventh gave the Dolphins a five-run lead, then Roden extended the advantage two 8-0 with a three-run home run in the eighth.

Nevins and Roden launched back-to-back home runs in the first inning in game two to give the 'Phins an early lead. The Dolphins doubled their lead in the second frame, then added five runs in the third and five more in the fourth to open up a 14-0 advantage.

Le Moyne's eight home runs in game two ties a program record that was set during the 2012 season.

Le Moyne and UMES will play game three of the NEC series on Saturday at 12 p.m.
