MEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT SAINT PETER'S, 2-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team recorded its second shutout of the season on Wednesday with a 2-0 win against Saint Peter's University at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins outshot the Peacocks 17-9, and allowed just one shot on goal during the 90 minutes to improve their record to 3-1-1, including 2-0-1 at home.

Redshirt-junior midfielder Ziad Abdul-Malak (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored his first goal of the campaign in the 21st minute with a rocket off his right foot from outside the 18-yard box into the top left corner of the Saint Peter's goal to give the 'Phins a 1-0 lead, then redshirt-senior defender Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) doubled the lead in the 38th minute with a half-bicycle kick from inside the penalty area that bounced off the diving goalkeeper's glove and hit the side netting.

Goodrich has now scored in three consecutive matches for the Dolphins.

With the win, Le Moyne surpassed its win total from the 2023 season.

It is always great to get a win and a clean sheet," said Le Moyne head coach Callum Donnelly '17, M '21. "I thought in the first half we were very good and scored two great goals. I felt our performance and energy levels dropped in the second half, but I was happy that we were able to manage the game with a clean sheet.

"We are showing that we can be a good team," Donnelly continued. "There were parts of our game in the first half that I was very pleased with. We just have to maintain those levels throughout the game and continue to improve. At this level, we are always delighted with a clean sheet. I have been happy with our team's attitude defensively. All of our players are chipping in and it starts from our attacking players. We still have ways to go and plenty to improve on for the upcoming games," Donnelly concluded.

Le Moyne sophomore goalkeeper Wyatt Dupell (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made his lone save in the 87th minute to tally his second clean sheet in the last three games.

The Dolphins controlled play during the first half, outshooting the Peacocks 12-3 during the first 45 minutes, and holding the advantage in corner kicks, 3-0.

Le Moyne took the first five shots of the game, then with just over 24 minutes remaining in the first half, Le Moyne freshman midfielder Giuliano Michitti (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) won the ball back for the Dolphins at the edge of their attacking third and sent a short pass ahead to redshirt-junior forward Jakob Priestman (Leek, England/Westwood/Missouri State).

Priestman moved to his left and sent a pass to Abdul-Malak in the middle of the field. Abdul-Malak quickly cut to his right, set up the shot, then smashed a right-footed screamer from about 25 yards out that flew into the top left corner of the goal to record his first tally of 2024 and put the Dolphins in front, 1-0.

With under eight minutes remaining in the first half, Le Moyne freshman forward Rhys Allport (Wirral, England/Reaseheath) brought the ball down in the left side of a crowded Saint Peter's penalty area. His cross was deflected into the air, then headed back into the air by a Saint Peter's defender.

The ball came down to left of Goodrich, who volleyed it with a left-footed half-bicycle into the right side of the goal to make it 2-0 in favor of the Dolphins.

Abdul-Malak and Priestman recorded a season-best four shots each during the win, while redshirt-freshman defender Vito Kreuzpaintner (Munich, Bavaria, Germany/FOS Nord/UNC Wilmington) took a season-high three shots.

The one shot on goal from Saint Peter's is the fewest allowed by the Dolphins in a game since the 2022 season.

The Dolphins registered one shutout victory in 2023, but so far this season have tallied two with a 1-0 win at nationally ranked Syracuse and a 2-0 victory on Wednesday against the Peacocks.

The Le Moyne men's soccer team will return to action on September 18 at St. Bonaventure, and will play its next home game on September 21 against Niagara.
