MEN'S SOCCER UPSETS SEVENTH-RANKED SYRACUSE, 1-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team defeated No. 7 Syracuse University by a score of 1-0 on Monday night at the SU Soccer Stadium to record the school's first win over a nationally ranked opponent in its Division I era.

Senior defender Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) scored the winning goal on a penalty kick in the 17th minute after redshirt-freshman forward Justin Pham (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Dayton) drew a foul in the left side of the Syracuse 18-yard box.

Le Moyne goalkeeper Wyatt Dupell (Cicero, N.Y./Ciero-North Syracuse) recorded a season-best eight saves, one away from his career-high, to register his second career clean sheet.

"A lot of things had to happen for us tonight to pull off a top performance," said Le Moyne head coach Callum Donnelly '17, M '21. "We played against one of the best teams in the country. We have so much respect for the Syracuse program and the coaching staff. Tonight is a big step in the right direction for our program.

"We were disciplined and concentrated throughout the match," Donnelly added. "We rode our luck at times, but I was proud of how we stuck through the difficult times together against some top attacking players like Kaloukian and Acquah. We tried to tell the boys not to be safe within the match. Be brave, and be on the front foot with our press. We tried to do that as often as we could, although it is tough against a great team.  We still have to improve as a team, and we have a really difficult game against Delaware on Saturday. They will be after it and we have to be at our best to get a result," Donnelly concluded.

Notable stats:
  • Goodrich's goal was his first of the season. The senior defender led the Dolphins in points in 2023 with four goals and seven assists.
  • Graduate center back Victor Boje Henriksen (Greve, Denmark/Greve Gymnasium/Saint Rose) made his Le Moyne debut against the Orange and played the full 90 minutes as the Dolphins recorded their first shutout win of the campaign.
  • Le Moyne improves to 2-1 with the win, while the seventh-ranked Orange fall to 2-1-1.
  • In what was the first-ever meeting between Le Moyne and Syracuse in men's soccer, the two sides played in front of a crowd of 2,134, which is the sixth-most attended match at SU Soccer Stadium since it opened in 1996, per the Syracuse sports information department.
  • Goodrich recorded both of Le Moyne's two shots on goal.
  • Along with Henriksen, Goodrich, Dupell, sophomore center back Maximilian Huss (Karben, Germany/Elly-Heuss-Schule) and senior midfielder Ziad Abdul-Malak (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each played the entire match.
  • The last time Syracuse suffered a shutout loss at home was against Virginia during the 2022 season.
  • The match was Le Moyne's first against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.
  • The Dolphins' win over No. 7 Syracuse was the program's first victory against a top 10 nationally ranked opponent at any level since the 2018 season, when Le Moyne bested No. 9 Adelphi in a Division II Northeast-10 Conference match.
  • Syracuse has qualified for the NCAA Championship in four out of the last five seasons, and won the program's first National Championship in 2022.
