Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) advanced to the finals in singles and doubles competition to lead the Le Moyne College women's tennis team at the Colgate Invite on Saturday and Sunday at the J. W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts.
The Dolphins combined to go 13-16 overall, including 7-13 in singles action and 6-3 in doubles play.
In the "A" draw, graduate student
Feriel Mahbouli (Tunisia) went 2-1 and advanced to the final. She was a 2-6, 6-3 ,10-6 winner over Siena's Andrea Vargas in her first match. She followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Colgate's Sophia Montero. In the final, she fell to Niagara's Isabel Garcia, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 and 10-7 winner.
Sophomore
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) went 1-2 in the "A" field. She lost to Colgate's Addie Eklund, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening match of the day. She then defeated Colgate's Rebecca Hess, 8-0. She closed out the weekend with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 setback to Colgate's Carina Cristobal.
In the "B" draw, Casares advanced to the final and posted a 2-1 record. She was a 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 victor over Cristobal. She followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Siena's Reegan Mullaney. She fell to Siena's Manuela Gomez in the final, 6-1, 6-3.
Senior
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) went 1-2 in the "B" field. She was upended by Niagara's Mercedes Velasco, 6-2, 6-2 in her first match. She then fell to Colgate's Amelia Galin, 8-4. She capped her weekend with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Colgate's Avery Isaac.
In the "C" field, junior
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) fell to Siena's Madeline De Faber-Schumacher, 0-6, 6-4, 12-10. She followed with an 8-5 setback to Colgate's Anya Kunar. Colgate's Sasha Herman then recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alvarez.
Junior
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to Herman. She was then edged by Colgate's Eliza Podlas, 8-6.
In the "D" draw, freshman
Adelie Wilson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) recorded a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Colgate's Paige Rothwell. She then fell to Isaac, 8-2. In her final match, she lost to Podlas, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).
In the doubles "A" field, Mahbouli and Fernando went 2-1. They teamed for a 6-2 win over Colgate's Anya Kunar and Cristobal. They then fell to Colgate's Montero and Galin, 6-4. In their final match of the weekend, they registered a 6-3 victory over Siena's De Faber and Vargas.
Alvarez and Barona went 1-2 in the "A" draw. They were edged by Niagara's Gabriela Melo and Larisa Kotok, 7-6 (8-6). They dropped their next match, 7-5, to Colgate's Gigi Bohan and Hess. They capped the invitational with a 6-1 win over Kunar and Cristobal.
Casares and Wilson won the "B" draw. They were 6-1 winners over Colgate's Herman and Rothwell to open play. The duo then defeated Siena's Camilla Bonini and Gomez, 6-4. In the final, they downed'Podlas and Isaac, 7-6 (7-3).
The Dolphins are next on the courts at the ITA Regional at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts October 10-15.
