Bridgewater, N.J. – Le Moyne College freshman
Gabriel Segubiense (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) has been named the NEC men's tennis Rookie of the Month, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
Segubiense is off to a 9-2 record through Le Moyne's first two events, including a 6-0 mark in singles and 3-2 in doubles. He opened his career with singles wins over opponents from Niagara, Binghamton and Colgate at Binghamton's Carousel Classic. He also teamed with sophomore
Luke Hoyland for a victory over Colgate at the event, while dropping a match with sophomore
Lorenzo Bortolaso to Binghamton.
At the NateRentals.com Binghamton Championships the following weekend, he won the "F" singles flight with a 3-0 record. He opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Arya Subaash Prabhu from FDU, then defeated Derek Winsness from Mercyhurst in the semifinal, 6-2, 2-0 and Saint Francis' Jonah Ng in the final, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles action with sophomore
Jacob Maravillas, the duo placed fifth. After falling to a team from Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals, 6-4, they defeated an FDU duo in the consolation semifinals, 6-2, and a team from Wagner in the fifth-place match, 6-3.
Segubiense was also named an NEC Prime Performer for his play in September, as were junior
Emmanuel Cottle (Toronto, Ontario/Ontario Virtual School/Alcorn State) and freshman
Carlo Zucchini (Varese, Italy/European School of Varese).
The Dolphins are next in action at the ITA New England Regional October 8-14 at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
