Trent Mosquera (Boston, Mass./Belmont Hill School) tallied 21 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 78-63 victory over Binghamton University in the "Battle for the Interstate" on Saturday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court.
Mosquera recorded 11 of his game-high point total in the first half, while posting four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Graduate student forward
Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Vincennes/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) registered his fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard
Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) finished with 12 points, including nine in the second half, four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard
Tennessee Rainwater (Davenport, Wash./Davenport/Utah Tech) was the fourth Dolphin in double digits with 10 points, while adding a season-high eight rebounds and a career-best four steals.
Bryson Wilson led the Bearcats in the setback with 17 points, including 11 in the first half, while adding five rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Demetrius Lilley turned in a double-double with 16 points, including 12 in the second half, and 10 rebounds. Jackson Benigni had 14 points.
The Dolphins led the game wire-to-wire after scoring the first 13 points of the contest over the initial 5:13. Mosquera started the scoring with a three-pointer, Jackson made a lay-up, sophomore guard
Jakob Blakley (Elgin, Ill./Walter Payton Preparatory) drilled a three-pointer and made a lay-up and then Garang buried a three-pointer.
After freshman guard
Eli Greenberg (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), who made his first collegiate start, drained a three-pointer to put the Dolphins up 19-4 with 13:37 left in the first half, the Bearcats scored eight points in a row to trim their deficit to seven. Wilson and Benigni made three-pointers and then Lilley had a lay-up.
Le Moyne scored the next four points to regain a double-digit lead, but Binghamton scored nine of the next 12 points to close within five, 26-21, with 4:40 to go. Zyier Beverly started the run with a put-back dunk, Wes Peterson made a three-pointer and then Wilson and Lilley countered a Mosquera three-pointer by scoring in the paint.
The Dolphins answered back with nine of the next 10 points to extend their lead back to 13 with just over one minute left. Jackson recorded a conventional three-point play and had a dunk off an offensive rebound and then Rainwater and Blakley made lay-ups.
Following a three-pointer by Wilson, Rainwater closed out the half with a thunderous dunk to give the Dolphins a 37-25 lead at the intermission.
After Le Moyne's lead bounced between nine and 13 points over the first three minutes of the second half, Benigni drilled a three-pointer with 16:35 left to get the Bearcats within 43-37.
The Dolphins pushed their lead back to 15 with 9:27 remaining with 15 of the next 21 points, which came from six different players.
The Bearcats got within 11 with 6:41 left on a free throw by Lilley, but the Dolphins countered with a 13-4 jaunt to take their largest lead of the season against a Division I opponent with 3:25 to play. Rainwater started the stretch with a lay-up, Garang scored seven points in a row, Mosquera made his fourth three-pointer of the contest and then Rainwater capped it with a foul shot.
Binghamton scored seven points in a row to get back within 13. Ryan Richardson made a three-pointer, Wilson had a dunk and then Lilley made two foul shots.
Mosquera finished off Le Moyne's scoring with three free throws with 90 seconds left, while Wilson set the final score with a free throw with five seconds left.
Le Moyne (5-5), which improved to 3-0 against New York State foes, is back in action on Tuesday, December 16 at the University of Texas at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT.
