MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS FINAL HOME GAME, 76-61, TO LIU

Syracuse, N.Y. – LIU had six players score in double figures en route to a 76-61 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Sophomore guard AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) was the only Dolphin to score in 17 points, 13 of which came in the first half, while going 12-of-12 from the foul line and adding four rebounds, four assists and two steals. He is the first Dolphin since Stan Buczek '17 on December 19, 2015 against Caldwell to finish a game 12-of-12 from the free throw line.

Brent Davis led the Sharks in scoring with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field to go with five steals and three rebounds. Terell Strickland tallied 15 points, six assists and six rebounds. Malachi Davis and Blake Lander each had 12 points, while Lander added four rebounds and four assists. Jamal Fuller and Shadrak Lasu each turned in 10 points, while Fuller had six rebounds and Lasu had five.

After the teams went back and forth over the opening five minutes, trading the lead twice, LIU recorded nine straight points to take a 17-9 lead with 11:30 left. Brent Davis scored four of the nine points.

Le Moyne answered with 19 of the next 23 points to take a 28-21 lead with 5:20 to play. Dancler tallied eight of the points, including six from the foul line, while senior forward Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) had seven points.

The Sharks countered with 12 of the next 13 points to go up 33-29 with 2:49 remaining in the half. Fuller scored the first five points, Strickland made two free throws, Brent Davis buried a three-pointer off a steal and then Lasu had a dunk to force a Le Moyne timeout.

Redshirt sophomore forward Nate Fouts (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles/Kimball Union Academy) followed with a jumper and then Dancler drained a three-pointer to put the Dolphins up 34-33 with 57 seconds left, but Strickland closed out the scoring in the half with a three-pointer 17 seconds to give the Sharks a 36-34 lead at the intermission.

Malachi Davis scored the first four points of the second half to give LIU a 40-34 lead.

After Strickland made two free throws for a 42-36 margin, the Dolphins scored 12 of the next 17 points to take the lead back. Fifth-year guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) started the run with a three-pointer, redshirt junior forward Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) made a lay-up, redshirt freshman guard Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) buried a three-pointer to knot the score at 44, Owens countered a Lander three-pointer with a lay-up and then Garang capped the run with two free throws with 12:58 left for a 48-47 lead.

LIU responded with 19 straight points over 6:11 to blow the game open. Brent Davis scored the first four points and had 10 points total in the streak, Lander scored five points, including a three-pointer to cap the run and force a Le Moyne timeout, and Malachi Davis and Strickland each made lay-ups.

After graduate student guard Will Amica (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/UAlbany) snapped the run with two free throws, Malachi Davis made two lay-ups around two Strickland free throws to give the Sharks their largest lead, 72-50, with 3:27 remaining.

The Dolphins scored 11 of the next 15 points to close out the game's scoring. Koroma made a lay-up with 3:14 left to snap Le Moyne's drought of 10:22 without a basket. He added another lay-up and then Dancler made four free throws. Graduate student guard Sam Donnelly (Vernon, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) ended the scoring with his second three-pointer of the season.

Le Moyne (9-20, 4-10 NEC) starts the final week of the regular season on Thursday at Central Connecticut State University at 7:00 p.m.
