3/24/2025 3:14:00 PM

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team will play its first midweek non-conference game on Tuesday at Canisius University. First pitch for the 110th all-time meeting between the Dolphins and the Golden Griffins is set for 3:00 p.m. at Canisius' Demske Sports Complex.

MATCHUP HISTORY:
Le Moyne holds a 79-30 all-time record against Canisius, including 58-15 during their time as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents. The two sides met last season for a non-conference matchup in Buffalo, reigniting the Upstate New York rivalry following a 13-year hiatus, with the Griffs claiming a 4-3 win over the 'Phins. Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) led Le Moyne at the plate during the setback with a double and a two-run home run.

Tuesday's contest will mark the first of seven midweek non-conference games for Le Moyne this season.

DOLPHIN RUNDOWN:
Le Moyne (5-14, 4-2 NEC) is coming off a non-conference weekend series at University of Massachusetts Lowell, during which they dropped the first two contests in a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 13-6 and 9-4 before recording their first non-conference win of the season in game three on Sunday by a score of 12-6.

Sophomore outfielder Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) had a career day in Sunday's win, tallying a career-high six RBIs and a career-high three hits, including his first career home run, a three-run shot, that gave the Dolphins a lead in the fourth inning that they would not relinquish.

Freshman infielder Tim Denet (West Harrison, N.Y./Iona Prep), the reigning NEC Rookie and Co-Player of the Week, provided two hits and a game-high three runs during the 12-6 win, while sophomore catcher Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) added two hits and two runs.

Through eight starts this season, Romich leads the Dolphins in doubles with five, and has recorded at least one double in each of his last four games played.

Denet currently leads Le Moyne in runs (14), hits (20), batting average (.377) and slugging percentage (.604) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (3), and on-base percentage (.604).

Junior outfielder Tyler Campbell (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.), who tallied a combined five hits, three runs, three doubles and four RBIs during the UMass Lowell series, leads Le Moyne in RBIs with 14 through 16 starts.

Denet (.469), Romich (.469), senior catcher Benji Ries (.444) and freshman infielder Dominick Russ (.436) each hold an on-base percentage above .400 so far this season.

Redshirt-sophomore right-handed starting pitcher AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) collected his team-leading second win of the season on Sunday at UML, limiting the River Hawks to five hits and three earned runs in 6.0 innings. Petraitis, who has gone at least five innings in four of his six appearances so far this season, leads the Dolphins in innings pitched at 33.1.

Senior right-handed starting pitcher Bobby McBride (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster/UConn/Coastal Carolina), who collected his first career win during game one of Le Moyne's conference series at Maryland Eastern Shore, leads Le Moyne in strikeouts (23), WHIP (1.13) and ERA (2.89) through 18.2 innings pitched.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS:
Canisius is led by head coach Matt Mazurek, a former standout player for the Griffs, who is in his seventh season at the helm of the program.

The Griffs compiled an 11-13 record in MAAC play during the 2024 season to earn the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament where they were eliminated following consecutive losses to Mount St. Mary's and Marist.

Canisius holds a 3-15 record so far this season, including 2-4 against MAAC competition. The Griffs most recently took one of three games during a conference series at Saint Peter's over the weekend.

During Canisius' 10-5 win over Saint Peter's in the series finale, sophomore infielder JC Spinosa, junior Tommy Sheridan and redshirt-sophomore catcher Thomas Zwirecki drove in two runs each, while junior infielder Mason Cisco recorded a game-high three hits, and redshirt-senior infielder Josh Niles tallied three runs and two hits.

On the year, senior infielder Trent Rumley leads the Griffs in hits (17), runs (10) and RBIs (14), while Spinosa has tallied 16 hits, 13 RBIs, nine runs and four home runs.

Freshman infielder/outfielder Bennett Cox has recorded a team-best .333 batting average with 16 hits, 10 runs, four doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs and a team-high five stolen bases through 13 starts in his rookie campaign.

Canisius redshirt-senior right-hander Ethan Hennessy holds a 1.41 WHIP with eight strikeouts and a .205 opponent batting average in six relief appearances.

Canisius has played midweek non-conference games against NEC side Mercyhurst and Niagara so far this season. During a 7-5 win at Mercyhurst on March 11, freshman Brian Smith got the start on the mound for the Griffs and went 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Sophomore Joe LoPinto was credited with the win after allowing one hit, one walk and zero runs with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings in relief, then Hennessy earned the save after tossing a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth. Cox led Canisius at the plate with two runs and two RBIs with the help of two-run home run.

The Griffs' most recent midweek contest at Niagara on March 18 resulted in an 11-6 loss.
