Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat against Cornell University in their home opener Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Big Red, who were ranked No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches National Preseason Poll, outshot the Dolphins 17-3, and held the advantage in shots on goal by a tally of 6-1.
Cornell sophomore Aidan Martin, the 2024 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, registered a career-high three points via one goal and one assist to help the Big Red claim the road win in their 2025 season opener.
Martin assisted senior defender Andrew Johnson on a corner kick in the 43
rd minute to put the Dolphins in front, then Martin made a run into the right side of the Le Moyne penalty area and found the back of the net himself in the 63
rd minute following a Cornell set piece.
With just under 11 minutes remaining in the match, Martin played a short corner kick to senior forward Giorgos Diakos, who sent a pass in the air towards the edge of the six-yard box where senior midfielder Sam Latona thumped a header into the right side of the net.
Le Moyne senior forward
Cameron Stuart (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley), sophomore midfielder
Giuliano Michitti (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton), and sophomore forward
Noah Morelli (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) each recorded a shot for Le Moyne during the setback.
With Le Moyne trailing 1-0 in the 53
rd minute, Le Moyne junior goalkeeper
Wyatt Dupell (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drove the ball into the edge of Le Moyne's attacking third, where redshirt-sophomore forward
Felix Ludemann (Wrestedt, Germany/Herzog-Ernst-Gymnasium Uelzen) got to it first and poked a pass into the top of the 18-yard box for Morelli. Morelli ripped a left-footed shot that had Cornell goalkeeper Ryan Friedberg beat, but Martin was there to support his keeper and knock the ball away from goal.
Ludemann drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box in the 57
th minute, giving the Dolphins a great free kick opportunity, but Michitti's shot off the set piece sailed over the crossbar.
The Le Moyne College men's soccer team will return to action at home on Wednesday against St. Bonaventure University.
