WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO SAINT PETER'S 1-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's soccer team were defeated in its home opener against Saint Peter's Sunday evening.

The two programs entered today's contest following a draw in their previous games on Thursday. Saint Peter's recorded a 1-1 draw against Saint Bonaventure, as Le Moyne earned a 0-0 draw against Siena.
 
The Peacocks registered the first shot of the game just over two minutes into the action, however untroubling freshman goalkeeper Sophia Salladin (Fulton, N.Y./Hannibal). They came close to finding the back of the net after junior midfielder Julia Pinho Magno fired a shot from the right side of the goal, bouncing back off the crossbar as the score remained even.
 
Salladin earned her first save of the game in the 12th minute as sophomore midfielder Macey Williams took a shot from distance, resulting in a comfortable save.
 
The Peacocks earned a controversial penalty in the 16th minute after senior midfielder/defender Jasmina Barhoumi and a Saint Peter's attacker collided in the penalty area, resulting in the official awarding a penalty to Saint Peter's.
 
Junior midfielder Joana Dias stepped up to take the penalty, calmly sliding it past Salladin to give Saint Peter's an early 1-0 lead.
 
Graduate Student midfielder Danielle Casey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) entered the game following the penalty for the 'Phins, along with freshman forward Kaitlyn Gilhooly (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee Comprehensive), fifth year midfielder Gabriella Sylstra (Little Falls, N.Y./Little Falls/Richard Bland/Old Dominion), freshman midfielder Ella Lathrop (Walworth, N.Y./Ruben A. Cirillo), and sophomore forward Nicole Calle (Providence, R.I./Cumberland) in the ensuing minutes of action.
 
Sylstra had the first chance of the game for the 'Phins in the 27th minute, not troubling the freshman goalkeeper Bergljot Kristinsdottir as she recorded her first save of the game. A few minutes later, Calle recorded a shot, resulting in a goal kick for the Peacocks.
 
Sophomore midfielder Ajla Ikeljic (Utica, N.Y./Frankfurt-Schuyler) and classmate defender Mallory Pietrzak (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) entered the game in the 33rd and 35th minutes of action, making their first appearance of the game.
 
Saint Peter's looked to add another goal to its tally just before half, registering three shots in the final five minutes, forcing Salladin to make a save to keep the deficit to just one goal. The two sides entered halftime with the Peacocks holding the 1-0 advantage over the 'Phins.
 
Le Moyne came out of the break with a new intensity, creating five shots within the first five minutes of the half, resulting in two saves from Kristinsdottir as the other attempts were blocked by the defense of Saint Peter's.
 
Graduate student defender Katelyn Courcy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) made her first appearance of the game in the 57th minute of action. Sophomore forward Alivia Day (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) entered the game three minutes later, making an instant impact, forcing another save from Kristinsdottir.
 
Le Moyne continued to create chance after chance throughout the second half, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net. Calle created several chances, cutting in from the left wing and combining with Sylstra, Gilhooly, and Lathrop, however the 'Phins still trailed 1-0.
 
The Dolphins had their best chance of the game in the 84th minute, as Gilhooly found a seam in behind the back line of the Peacocks, as she fired a shot inside the box, just missing the bottom left corner and resulting in a goal kick.
 
The game concluded as Saint Peter's snuck away with a 1-0 win. Despite the outcome, Le Moyne played its best half of the season, and have a lot to look forward to as the season progresses.
 
Notable Numbers:
  • Logan Cookinham and Giovanna Vigliotti have started all six contests for the 'Phins
  • Salladin made her third consecutive start

With no midweek game, the Dolphins are back in action at Ted Grant Field next Sunday, as the Great Danes of UAlbany visit Syracuse, N.Y. Action is schedule to kick off at 4:00 P.M.
