St. Charles, Mo. – The Lindenwood University Lions recorded a 2-0 win over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Lindenwood's Hunter Stadium.
The Lions scored once in each half, while graduate goalkeeper Quinn Closson registered six saves to secure the shutout win.
Lindenwood, which received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches National Top 25 Poll, outshot Le Moyne during the 90 minutes by a tally of 17-12, and held the advantage in shots on goal, 10-6.
Le Moyne sophomore forward
Rhys Allport (Wirral, England/Reaseheath) took a game-high four shots for the Dolphins, with two shots on target.
Diego Martinez (Veracruz, Mexico/Gulf Coast (Fla.),
Francesco Pagano (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Syracuse/Coastal Carolina),
Felix Ludemann (Wrestedt, Germany/Herzog-Ernst-Gymnasium Uelzen) and
Antonino Pagano (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Syracuse/Coastal Carolina) each added one shot on goal for the Dolphins.
Junior goalkeeper
Wyatt Dupell (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded a season-best seven saves for Le Moyne.
The Dolphins recorded at least 10 shots in a game for the third time this season, but did not earn a corner kick in a game for the first time this season.
Le Moyne created the first chance of the match in the fourth minute as Allport received the ball just outside the 18-yard box and ripped a left-footed shot that was caught by Closson.
With 23:20 remaining in the first half, Lindenwood's Sebastian Cerda Tous made a run into the left-side of the Le Moyne penalty area and smashed a left-footed shot towards the near post that was batted away by Dupell.
On the ensuing corner kick, the delivery from senior forward Ethan Blake skipped across the box to junior defender Luke Neely who headed the ball perfectly back across goal and into the top left corner of the net to put the Lions in front, 1-0.
With just under 21 minutes left in the first half, Martinez carried the ball from the right side of the field to the center of Le Moyne's attacking third and hit a left-footed shot that was saved by Closson.
Off a quick counterattack from Lindenwood in the 32
nd minute, Jarred Hendricks created space on the right side and attempted to curl a low left-footed shot towards the left side of the Le Moyne goal, but Dupell dove to his right and knocked the ball away.
Lindenwood's Jozef Palushaj redirected a header on goal in the 35
th minute following a corner kick, but Dupell once again dove to make the stop.
Lindenwood carried its 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
With 43:20 left in the second half, Allport sent a long ball in the air from the right sideline towards the left side of the Lindenwood penalty area, where sophomore forward
Noah Morelli (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield rose above his defender and headed the ball back across goal to the right side of the box. Junior defender
Cole Biasi (Buford, Ga./Flowery Branch/Georgia State) got to the bouncing ball first and took a right-footed shot that flew over the crossbar and out of bounds for a goal kick.
Lindenwood doubled its lead in the 57
th minute as Luca Bartoni ripped a right-footed shot from the top of the box that snuck past Dupell and rolled into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Ludemann received a pass in the right side of the box in the 66
th minute and ripped a low shot on goal that was scooped up by Closson.
Closson immediately rolled the ball to one of his defenders, and in Lindenwood's attempt to play out of the back, Le Moyne junior midfielder
Maximilian Huss (Karben, Germany/Elly-Heuss-Schule) applied defensive pressure and poked the ball away to Morelli in the left side of the penalty area. Morelli used his first touch to slide a pass to his right for Allport, teeing up a right-footed shot that went over the crossbar.
The Lions nearly extended its lead further with just over 21 minutes remaining in the match as sophomore forward Alander Soares sent a pass on the ground across goal to Bartoni whose shot from point blank range was stopped by a diving Dupell.
With just under 15 minutes remaining in the second half, sophomore midfielder
Giuliano Michitti (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) slipped a pass between two defenders into the left side of the penalty area for
Francesco Pagano. Pagano ran onto the ball and took a left-footed shot that was saved by an oncoming Closson.
Lindenwood prevented Le Moyne from putting a shot on goal in the final 14:55 of the game to close out to the 2-0 win and improve their record on the year to 7-0.
The Le Moyne College men's soccer team will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. match at Niagara University. The Dolphins will then begin NEC play on September 28 at home against Saint Francis.
