Binghamton, N.Y. – Seniors
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) won their singles flights and teamed for third place in doubles to lead the Le Moyne College women's tennis team at the NateRentals.com Binghamton Championships hosted by Binghamton University Friday through Sunday at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center.
Alvarez won the "D" flight with three victories. She opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chicago State's Mackenzie King. She then defeated LIU's Leena Kuittinen, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals. In the final, she rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory over LIU's Jenna Svatos.
Simeonova won the "G" flight with a trio of wins. In the first round, she registered a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Stonehill's Piper Remillard. She then downed Binghamton's Kayla Castellanos, 6-3, 6-2. In the final, she had a 6-2, 3-2 lead over Sophia Cunningham of Saint Francis before Cunningham had to retire.
In the doubles "B" flight, Alvarez and Simeonova finished in third place. The duo opened with a 6-2 victory over New Haven's Victorja Togores and Sofia Lazaro. They suffered a 6-0 loss in the semifinals to Wagner's Samantha Bentsianov and Hannah Fitzgerald. The won the third-place match, 6-3, over Chicago State's Danina Hughes and Nikita Liyanage.
Senior
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) and sophomore
Adelie Wilson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) won the doubles "B" flight with three victories. They opened with a 6-3 win over Mercyhurst's Kiersten Brown and Ellyana Jacobs. They tallied a 6-1 win in the semifinals over Chicago State's Hughes and Liyanage. They captured the flight title with a 6-1 victory over Wagner's Bentsianov and Fitzgerald.
Casares finished in fifth place in the "D" singles flight. She fell in the first round to LIU's Svatos, 6-1, 2-6, 10-4. She then recorded a win over Binghamton's Samantha Jaros by retirement. In the fifth-place match, she registered a win over Wagner's Dariana Vera by retirement.
Junior
Lilia Raiss (Temara, Morocco/Descartes) advanced to the final of the "E" flight. She was a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 winner in the first round over Breeze Simon of Saint Francis. She then defeated New Haven's Micaela Rosignuolo, 6-3, 6-3. She fell to FDU's Ann Kato in the final, 7-5, 7-5.
In the "A" flight, senior
Emma Sanchez Jimenez (Marbella, Spain/Victoria Kent Marbella/Eastern Florida State College/Carson-Newman) fell to eventual champion Oleksandra Ovsiienko of FDU, 6-3, 6-1. She fell by retirement to Kelly Dowuona in the consolation bracket.
In the "B" flight, junior
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) fell to Stonehill's Lilah Shallcross, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round. She lost by retirement to Mercyhurst's Simone Mercier in the consolation bracket.
In the "F" flight, sophomore
Charlotte Klein (Mellenthin, Germany/Education World Wide (Fla.)) fell to Stonehill's Arya Chabria by retirement after dropping the first set, 6-1. She then lost by retirement to Chicago State's Hughes in the consolation bracket.
In the "A" doubles flight, Sanchez Jimenez and Fernando opened with a 6-3 loss to Dasha Chichkina and Helena Lynn of Saint Francis. They then fell by retirement to Mercyhurst's Daria Rogova and Simone Mercier.
In the "C" flight, Raiss and Klein were upended by LIU's Paula Guillen and Emma Barclay, 6-0, in the first round. They fell by retirement to New Haven's Pierina Lescher and Addison Rosser in the consolation bracket.
The Dolphins are back on the court Saturday and Sunday at the Colgate Invitational at J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts in Hamilton.
