WAGNER RALLIES FOR 8-7 OVERTIME WIN OVER MEN’S LACROSSE

Staten Island, N.Y. – Theo Kostakos scored less than one minute into overtime to give Wagner College an 8-7 victory over the Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team in NEC action on Saturday afternoon at Hameline Field.

Le Moyne got the scoring started just 1:46 into the game as senior attackman Thomas Berry (Tully, N.Y./Tully) finished off a feed from sophomore midfielder Emmet McDermott (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) during an extra-man opportunity.

The Seahawks answered with the final three goals of the quarter. Damon Clark knotted the score at one apiece with 11:07 remaining. Just 38 seconds later, Jake Mitchell tallied his first goal of the day for the lead. Clark scored again with 4:24 to go to make it 3-1.

The Dolphins got back within one only 34 seconds into the second quarter as junior attackman Aaron Clouthier (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) found the back of the net after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Conner Vaughn (Chittenango, N.Y./Vandermont (Texas)/Limestone).

Wagner regained a two-goal advantage with 7:50 left as Smith Callaghan scored after receiving a feed from Dylan Popehn.

Senior midfielder Nathan Hoban (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) got the Dolphins within 4-3 at the intermission by scoring with three seconds remaining.

Le Moyne scored all four of the goals in the third quarter to regain the lead. Berry started the run at the 9:34 mark to even the score at four. Sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Charles Colombi (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) put the Dolphins back in front with his first career goal with 8:33 remaining. Clouthier followed at the 2:10 mark by finishing off a dish from Berry. Vaughn registered his team's final goal with 52 seconds to go in the period.

Wagner tallied all three of the goals in the final quarter. Following six and one-half minutes of scoreless play to start the period, Danny McMahon snapped Wagner's drought of 29:23 to get the team within 7-5. After a shot clock violation on the Dolphins, Jacob Bass scored from the front edge of the crease off a feed from the right side from Mitchell with 2:09 remaining. Following two saves by goalkeeper Angus Snow, Mitchell scooped up a loose ball off a blocked shot and sent a side-armed, left-handed shot into the back of the net with 19 seconds left to tie the score at seven apiece.

Following an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Dolphins on the ensuing faceoff, the Seahawks started overtime with the ball. After Wagner sent one shot wide, Kostakos fired a shot into the right side of the goal at the 3:07 mark for the game-winner after taking a pass from Mitchell.

Junior goalkeeper Lucas Winger (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) took the loss between the pipes after making nine saves (against seven goals) over 56:12. Snow earned the win after making 12 saves.

Le Moyne (3-10, 2-3 NEC) closes out its road schedule on Friday at Cleveland State University at 6:00 p.m.
