New Haven, Conn. - Junior Drew Acquaviva (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) won two individual events and teamed on a pair of relay victories to lead the Le Moyne College men's swimming and diving team to a fourth-place finish at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships hosted by Southern Connecticut State at Hutchinson Natatorium from Friday to Sunday. Classmate Katie O'Donnell (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) led the women's squad to a fourth-place finish with an individual win and two second-place finishes.
In the men's team competition, Le Moyne scored 488 points to place fourth, up a spot from last year. Southern Connecticut State ran away with first place with 812 points to register its seventh Northeast-10 Championship in the last eight years. The College of Saint Rose tallied 546 points for second place, while Bentley, which won last year's Championship, placed third with 519 points. Pace totaled 395 points for fifth, Adelphi recorded 304 for sixth and Saint Michael's wrapped up the standings with 177 points.
On the women's side, the Dolphins tallied 445 points to place fourth. Southern Connecticut State placed first with 955 points to win the team title for the eighth consecutive season. Bentley finished second with 624 points, while Saint Rose came in third with 495 points. Assumption (427), Pace (390), Saint Michael's (217) and Adelphi (142) rounded out the standings.
On the men's side, Acquaviva picked up his first individual victory of the competition by placing first in the 100-yard backstroke for the second straight year in an NCAA "B"-cut time of 50.79 seconds. He was the top seed in the finals after setting the Northeast-10 record in the preliminaries with a time of 50.72 seconds. In Sunday's fourth event, Acquaviva touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke for the second consecutive year with an NCAA "B"-cut time of 1:53.24, his fastest time of the year by over two seconds. He also added a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 21.55 seconds.
Acquaviva also teamed on a pair of relay victories. In Friday's first event, Acquaviva joined senior Sean Hosford (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), sophomore Scott Thieke (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and freshman Tyler Olson (Warners, N.Y./West Genesee) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a conference-record time of 1:25.57. The quartet of Acquaviva, Olson, Hosford and sophomore James Walker (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) opened Saturday's competition placing first in the 200-yard medley relay in a pool-record time of 1:36.37. The Dolphins also finished in the top-five in two other relay events over the weekend. To close out Saturday's competition, Thieke, Olson and freshmen Connor Agen (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and Greg Sanzari (Newington, Conn./Newington) teamed to place fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:24.53. To cap the meet, Olson, Acquaviva, Thieke and Hosford placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best time of 3:10.38.
Thieke added a pair of third-place finishes over the three days. He touched the wall third in 2:00.16 in the 200-yard IM on Friday and finished the 400-yard IM in 4:22.12 on Saturday. Hosford registered a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 47.72 seconds.
O'Donnell picked up her third career Northeast-10 win by placing first in the 100-yard backstroke for the second time in three years with an NCAA "B"-cut time of 57.45 seconds. She recorded her first second-place finish of the meet in the 200-yard IM on Friday with an NCAA "B"-cut and season-best time of 2:06.99, the fourth-fastest time in history in the event at the Northeast-10 Championships. O'Donnell wrapped up her weekend by touching the wall in the 100-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B"-cut and school-record time of 53.32 seconds, but was edged out for first place by just one one-hundredth of a second.
O'Donnell was also a member of four top-five relay squads. She teamed with seniors Sarah Salanger (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) and Maggie Donovan (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and classmate Mary Chidsey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to place second in the meet-opening 200-yard freestyle relay with a school-record time of 1:39.11, eclipsing the previous record by 0.35 seconds. In Saturday's first event, Salanger, O'Donnell, Chidsey and sophomore Jacqueline Daly (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) posted a season-best time of 1:50.17 to place fourth in the 200-yard medley relay. In Saturday's last event, O'Donnell, Chidsey, Salanger and freshman Allie Scorzelli (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:00.35. To close out the Championship, Chidsey, Salanger, Donovan and O'Donnell registered a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best 3:39.22.
Salanger added three top-four finishes over the three days, while Scorzelli added a fifth-place finish. Salanger placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.69), third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.67) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (54.52). Scorzelli's fifth-place finish came in the 400-yard IM with a season-best 4:50.32.
