Box Score 2 Brookhaven, N.Y. – Jessie Stavola registered 18 strikeouts to lead Dowling to a doubleheader sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Friday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. The Golden Lions took the opening game, 1-0, and won the nightcap, 4-2.
After six and one-half scoreless innings, the Golden Lions scored the only run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Designated player Stephanie Tarango led off the frame by reaching second on a two-base error by the left fielder. Following a pop out, Stavola singled to left field to move pinch-runner Amber Fogarty to third. After a line out and a walk to load the bases, center fielder Krystil Hofmann singled down the right field line to drive in Fogarty for the walk-off victory.
Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss for the Dolphins after giving up just the unearned run on three hits, while striking out seven batters over six and two-thirds innings of work. Stavola earned the win after striking out 13 Dolphins in the complete-game one-hit performance.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with a run on two hits in the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) led off the game by being hit by a pitch. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) and senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) followed with infield singles to load the bases. After a fielder's choice retired Tram at home, junior first baseman Fran Kiernan">Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Cashel.
The Golden Lions evened the score at one apiece with a run on two Le Moyne errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. First baseman Jamie Laird reached on a two-base error by the third baseman with one out. Following a ground out, catcher Emily Slack reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing pinch-runner Fogarty to score from second.
Dowling took the lead with three runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Third baseman Jessica Roque walked to open the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a single to right center by Hofmann, left fielder Crystal Tarango singled to left center to drive in pinch-runner Marie Rancano. After a walk by shortstop Melissa Perez to load the bases, Laird singled to center to drive in Hofmann. Stephanie Tarango then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in her younger sister Crystal.
Le Moyne attempted to rally in the seventh inning, but was only able to plate one run on one hit and a Dowling error. Tram reached on a one-out error by the shortstop. Following a pop out and a passed ball, Edmondson singled to center field to drive in Tram.
Harrison also took the loss in the nightcap after yielding four runs (three earned) on just three hits over six innings in the circle, while posting five strikeouts. Stavola picked up the win in relief by tossing the final two and two-thirds innings, while striking out five and allowing an unearned run on one hit.
Le Moyne (4-10) returns to the field on Saturday at Caldwell for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
