SOFTBALL SWEPT BY LANDER AND #4 NORTH GEORGIA ON SECOND DAY OF MID-SOUTH CLASSIC

Reidville, S.C. – The Le Moyne College softball team was swept in a pair of games on Sunday at the Mid-South Classic Softball Tournament at Tyger River Park. The Dolphins fell in their first game, 7-3, to Lander and was knocked off by fourth-ranked North Georgia, 3-0, in their second contest.

Lander opened the game's scoring with three runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Brittney Sheriff led off with a double and advanced to third as first baseman Taylor Donson reached on a throwing error. After Sheriff scored on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Jaime Presnell, right fielder Arielle Buchholz doubled to drive in Donson. Following an out and a walk by shortstop Casey Corbitt, left fielder Alyssa Hartley singled to knock in Buchholz.

The Bearcats added a pair of runs on three hits in the second inning. Sheriff opened the frame with a triple and came in to score on a single by Donson. Following a bunt single by Presnell that moved Donson to third, Donson scored on a passed ball.

Le Moyne answered with two runs on a hit and four Lander errors in the bottom of the fourth. Senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) started the rally with a two-out single and then stole second. After sophomore pitcher Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland) reached on an error by the second baseman, senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) reached on an error by the second baseman, while Shea scored and Batson moved to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. Batson then raced home on a passed ball.

Lander added two runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Sheriff singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. After Presnell tripled to drive in Sheriff, she scored on a passed ball.

The Dolphins wrapped up the game's scoring with a run on two Lander errors in the bottom of the seventh. Ford reached on an error by the left fielder to lead off the frame and came around to score on a two-out error by the center fielder.

Batson took the loss after yielding seven runs (three earned) on 11 hits over seven innings of work, while striking out eight batters. Hayley Leissner picked up the win after not allowing an earned run and giving up only two hits, while registering five strikeouts.

North Georgia, whose senior class has won 173 games and appeared in three NCAA Championships, scored the only run it would need in the first inning. Senior center fielder Pilar Harden led off the game by reaching on a two-base error by the center fielder. After moving to third on a ground out, Harden scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Hilary Cox.

The Saints added a pair of runs on one hit and one Le Moyne error in the third inning. Harden drew a walk to open the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a double to left by Cox. After stealing third, Cox scored as Karlie Gillam reached on an error by the first baseman.

Sophomore southpaw Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) took the loss for the Dolphins, despite allowing just two hits in going the distance in the circle. Senior first baseman Leah Ford">Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) registered a pair of hits in the game, while also stealing a base. Krysten Connelly, who picked up a victory over the Dolphins two years ago, registered three strikeouts to earn the win for the Saints.

Le Moyne (2-2) returns to the diamond on Monday at Lander at 3:00 p.m
