Aidan Fuller (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) shot a career-best 140 to place first and lead the Le Moyne College men's golf team to a first-place finish at the Northeast Challenge hosted by Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday and Sunday at the par-70, 6543-yard Concord Country Club.
The Dolphins continued their strong start to the season by claiming first place at the 12-team event by six strokes with a 597. They opened the event with a 296 on Saturday to take a five-shot lead. They added to the margin on Sunday with a 301 to close out their third wire-to-wire victory over the last 13 months and fifth total win over the span. Bentley University, which won the Northeast-10 Conference Championship last weekend, took second place with a 603 after carding rounds of 301 and 302. Daemen College totaled a 605 off rounds of 302 and 303 to finish in third place. The College of the Holy Cross turned in rounds of 304 and 311 to place fourth with a 615, while Franklin Pierce University placed fifth with a 618 off rounds of 306 and 312.
Fuller earned medalist honors by five shots after registering a 36-hole score of even-par 140, the top score by a Dolphin in over seven years. He opened the Challenge with a 73 to land in a three-way tie for sixth place. He then recorded a career-best 67 to climb up the standings and become just the second Dolphin to claim medalist honors over the last three years. His 67 is the best round by a Dolphin in over seven years. Seniors
Mitch Hillegas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) and
Dan Molter (Port Crane, N.Y./Chenango Forks) tied for eighth place with a 151. Hillegas registered a career-best 72 in the first round to land in a four-way tie for second place and then carded a 79 on Sunday. After placing in a four-way tie for 13th place on Saturday with a 76, Molter posted a 75 in the second round to jump five spots in the standings. Freshman
Joe Petrin (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) finished in a tie for 16th place in his collegiate debut with a 155. He shot a 75 in the first round to land in a three-way tie for 10th place and then posted an 80 in the second round. Junior
Alex Kinkaid (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tied for 26th place with a 159 after recording scores of 78 and 81.
The Dolphins are back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Saint Rose Fall Shootout at Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland, N.Y. The Dolphins are the defending champion at the Shootout after posting a 25-stroke victory last year.
