MEN'S TENNIS EDGES AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 5-4

Schenectady, N.Y. – Junior Shane Evans (Oswego, N.Y./Pulaski) and senior Alessandro Nieves (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each won two matches to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team to a 5-4 win over American International College on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the SPORTIME Tennis Club.

Evans picked up his first win of the day by teaming with senior Daryl Johnson (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) to defeat James Worrall and Gustavo Franceli, 8-3, at second doubles. Nieves combined with freshman Adam Celeta (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) to register an 8-2 win at third doubles over Alfie Cleave and Jason Popek. The Yellow Jackets claimed the point at first doubles as Cassio Schwab and Boris Tiberkov topped freshmen James Gayvert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Benjamin Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), 8-6.

In singles action, the teams split the six matches. Evans was victorious over Franceli at the third spot with consecutive scores of 6-1. Nieves improved to 4-3 in conference action with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cleave at the fifth spot, while sophomore Blaine Drake">Blaine Drake (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Timothy Zoma at sixth singles. At the top spot, Schwab recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gayvert, while Worrall was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Johnson at fourth singles. In the tightest match of the day, Tiberkov needed three sets to defeat Spoor, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Le Moyne (4-7, 3-5 NE-10) completes its non-conference schedule on Friday, April 4 against the University of the District of Columbia at 4:00 p.m.
