Sean Beney (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) placed second and classmate
Jeanette Cudney (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) placed third overall to lead the Le Moyne College men's and women's cross country teams to second-place finishes as they opened the season on Saturday by hosting the Le Moyne College Alumni Short Course Invitational.
In the men's race, SUNY Delhi captured first place in the team competition with 29 points after having three of the top seven finishers on the day. The Dolphins placed second with 41 points, while Daemen College was third with 65 points. SUNY Delhi's Kobie Lane crossed the finish line first in a time of 20:32.71.
Beney, who placed fifth in the race as a freshman and sixth last year, covered the six-kilometer course just four seconds behind Lane in 20:36.01. Freshman
Nick Taylor (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) crossed the finish line sixth with a time of 21:12.80, while sophomore
Griffin Klein (Fair Haven, N.Y./Red Creek) posted a time of 22:03.38 to place ninth, a six-spot improvement from last year. Freshman
Chris Davitt (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) was one spot back in 22:15.77, while classmate
Dom Battaglia (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded a time of 23:22.09 to place 18th in his collegiate debut to round out Le Moyne's scorers.
On the women's side, Daemen won the team title for the second straight year with 22 points after having five of the top eight scorers. The Dolphins recorded 33 points to place second, while Wells College placed third with 89 points. Daemen's Amy Trabert was the first collegiate harrier to cross the finish line in a time of 16:20.51.
Cudney, who opened her first two seasons with second and seventh-place finishes, navigated the four-kilometer course in 16:28.76. Sophomore
Brittney Mack (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park), who placed third as a freshman, crossed the finish line in 16:37.21 to place fifth. Freshman
Siara Clos (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga) was the third Dolphin to complete the course, posting a time of 17:33.87 to place ninth. Sophomore
Rachael Miller (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was one spot back in 17:46.08, while freshman
Mya Walters (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) was another spot back in 11th in 17:57.18.
The Dolphins are back in action next Saturday at the Bruce Bridgeman Invitational hosted by Finger Lakes Community College. The women's five-kilometer race starts at 12:30 p.m. and the men's five-mile race is scheduled for a 1:15 p.m. start.
