Ludlow, Mass. – The fifth-seeded Le Moyne College women's tennis team won four singles matches en route to a 5-4 victory over fourth-seeded Assumption College in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Ludlow Tennis Club.
With the victory, Le Moyne improves to 3-8 all-time in the conference championship and advance to the NE10 semifinals for the first time in the program's history. The Dolphins will visit top-seeded Stonehill College on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The Skyhawks defeated the Dolphins, 8-1, in the regular-season matchup on October 15.
Le Moyne (13-4), which avenged its only road loss of the season (September 17), earned its first point of the match at the second doubles position as freshmen
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and
Camila Humala (Lima, Peru/Antonio Raimondi) defeated Maria Monje and Valeria Sanchez, 8-6. Cassie Burbine and Julia Chappell were 8-5 winners for the Greyhounds at the first position over seniors
Rithika Vajjiravelu (Chennai, Tamil Nadu/Kendriya Vidyalaya) and
Amica Benoit-Limosani (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec/Collège Saint-Maurice). Paige Benoit and Camille Latoni gave Assumption a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 victory over junior
Tiffany Hamdan (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City/Roberts Wesleyan) and freshman
Caroline St. Antoine (Longueuil, Québec/Cégep Édouard-Montpetit), 8-6.
Vajjiravelu started off the singles competition by cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Burbine at the top position for her 50th career victory. St. Antoine gave the Dolphins a 3-2 lead by defeating Monje at the fourth position, 6-3, 6-4.
Chappell rallied at the second spot to record a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Hamdan to even the match at three apiece.
The Dolphins regained the lead as Benoit-Limosani was a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) winner at the third position over Benoit.
Latoni tied the match at four apiece with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the sixth spot against Humala.
The Dolphins clinched the victory as Nunez held off Sanchez at the fifth position for a 6-0, 5-7, 6-0 win, her 17th of the year. The 17 wins are the most by a Dolphin in a season over the last 13 years.
