Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomores
Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) and
Pablo Fernandez (Aviles, Spain/Real Oviedo) were each part of two goals to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
With the shutout, senior goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) tied Matthew Silva '14 for the most career shutouts in the program's history with 26.
The Dolphins scored the only goal they would need just 2:30 into the contest on the game's first shot. After carrying the ball down the left side of the field, Fernandez served the ball in front of the net, where first-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) headed the ball into the middle of the net from three yards out at the left post for his team-best eighth goal of the season.
Faryar had the only other scoring threat of the half, but his attempt at the 10:21 mark hit off the right goalpost.
Le Moyne doubled its lead just under 10 minutes into the second half. As he did on the first goal, Fernandez carried the ball down the left side and centered the ball. This time the pass was on the ground and Faryar was able to tip the ball into the bottom right corner of the net from 10 yards out for his second goal of the campaign.
After forcing New Haven's goalkeeper to make three saves over the next 20 minutes, the Dolphins finished off the game's scoring in the 78th minute. From the middle of the field, freshman midfielder
Joe Falcone (, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) fed Faryar for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Faryar side-stepped the keeper at the penalty kick stripe and rolled a shot in the center of the goal for his 17th goal as a Dolphin.
Each team put one shot on goal over the final nine minutes, but the goalkeepers kept the score at 3-0.
Beaury registered a save in each half en route to the shutout victory, his fourth of the season and second straight. Stefano Lorusso, who leads the NE10 in saves, tallied six saves, all of which came in the second half, in the defeat. The Dolphins registered an 18-10 advantage in shots, including 12-6 in the second half, while posting a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (5-1-1, 2-1-1 NE10), which has held New Haven scoreless in 10 meetings as NE10 foes, is back at Ted Grant Field on Tuesday against Assumption College at 3:00 p.m.
