Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored a career-high two goals to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Stonehill College on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
After the Dolphins had their first shots saved, they scored the game's opening off an intended pass in the 20th minute. After receiving the ball on the left side of the penalty box, Falcone carried the ball towards the goal box before chipping a pass towards the center of the goal intended for redshirt freshman midfielder
Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn). Before the ball was able to connect with Henne's head, it connected with the head of a Stonehill defender and went into the back of the net at the 19:33 mark for Falcone's first goal of the season.
Following a wide shot by the Dolphins in the 30th minute, the Skyhawks scored off the ensuing goal kick. Goalkeeper Andrew Hammersley blasted the kick from the right corner of the goal box over midfield. After the ball bounced, Brandon Carroll collected it and outraced two Le Moyne defenders into the penalty box before sliding a shot from 14 yards out under the goalkeeper and into the net at the 30:18 mark for his second goal of the season.
Each team had a shot blocked over the final 12 minutes as the teams went into the intermission tied at one.
As in the first half, the Dolphins scored on their fourth shot on goal of the second stanza, albeit this half following five other shots that were off target. Falcone collected the ball near midfield and then weaved his way through the defense before firing a shot from inside the top of the penalty box. The shot glanced off the diving goalkeeper's fingertips and into the left side of the net at the 79:31 mark for his first career multi-goal game.
Stonehill was unable to take a shot over the final 10 minutes of the game.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) earned his 10th win of the season between the pipes. Hammersley registered eight saves, including four in each half, in the setback. Le Moyne registered a 21-4 advantage in shots, including 12-1 in the second half, while taking all nine of the game's corner kicks, including six in the first half.
Le Moyne (10-4-1, 6-3-1 NE10), which is unbeaten over its last five games and moved into a tie for third place in the NE10 standings, concludes its regular season home schedule on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against the University of New Haven. Prior to the game, seniors
