Syracuse, N.Y. - Southern New Hampshire University's Nadjib Chibout scored in the 105th minute on an assist from Nicolas Gonzalez during the second extra time period to earn the Penmen a 1-0 victory over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team at Ted Grant Field on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The Dolphins, playing the match without key players Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) and
Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany/Schul-und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin/Bridgeport) due to them both receiving red cards during the team's previous match, tried to open the scoring in the ninth minute of the match when first year forward
Michael Sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Ninians) made a move past his defender down the wing and sent a cross into the box that was headed towards goal by
Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira), but the redshirt-freshman's shot sailed over the crossbar and out of bounds for a goal kick.
Some skillful combination play between redshirt-freshman defender Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) and graduate midfielder Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) in the 13th minute led to a Falcone shot from the top of the box that bounced wide of the goal.
Le Moyne goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) saved a shot from Alexander Reiter in the 27th minute to keep the game scoreless.
In the 48th minute of the match Goodrich attacked the Penmen defense and ripped a shot with his left foot towards the near post, but it was saved by Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Jackson Rivers.
Mahr made three saves between the 55th and 61st minute of the match for the Dolphins to keep the score level.
There was only one shot on goal taken by either side during the last 20 minutes of regulation; in the 87th minute a shot from Reiter was kept out of the Le Moyne net by Mahr, who finished the match with eight saves.
Neither side put a shot on goal in the first extra time period, but five minutes into the second extra time period Gonzalez sent a pass into space for Chibout who placed a shot past Mahr from 12 yards out to end the match and give the Penmen a 1-0 conference win.
The Le Moyne College men's soccer team will travel to Manchester, New Hampshire on Tuesday, October 19 to take on Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. EST.
