MEN'S SOCCER FALLS 2-1 IN EXTRA TIME TO SAINT ROSE

Syracuse, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Kevin Winglosky scored in the second minute of the first extra time period to lift the College of Saint Rose over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team by a score of 2-1 at Ted Grant Field on Wednesday evening.

Le Moyne graduate student goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was called into action early on for the Dolphins, making two saves within the first five minutes of the contest.

In the 11th minute of the match Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) absorbed contact from his defender down the left sideline, went around a cul-de-sac, dribbling towards the middle of the attacking third and crossing it to Stern at the far post. Stern soared high in the air above his defender and headed it towards goal but the shot bounced wide of the right post.

Redshirt freshman left back Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) made an impressive run along the left touchline in the 17th minute, withstanding contact from the defender pursuing him from behind and, while in a full sprint, playing a ball directly to the feet of Falcone in the left-center portion of the Le Moyne attacking third. Falcone took a couple dribbles to his right before sending a shot curling around the diving Saint Rose goalkeeper into the top right corner of the net to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.

Graduate forward Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne) tried to double the Le Moyne lead with 23 minutes remaining in the first half, going at his defender down the right wing and ripping a shot on the ground across the face of the net that rolled just wide of the left post.

In the 32nd minute of the match, graduate midfielder Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences), dribbling in the Le Moyne attacking third, played a ball between the two Saint Rose center backs to put Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UNC Asheville) in on goal, but the shot from the junior forward's right foot went wide of the right post.

Goodrich and Michael Sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Ninians) both put shots on target for Le Moyne in the last 10 minutes of the first half, but both were saved by Tomas Rozman in net for the Golden Knights to keep the score 1-0 going into the halftime break.

Just under 10 minutes into the second half, Falcone, looking for his second goal of the evening, dribbled from the left touchline all the way to the right side of the pitch before putting a shot with his right foot on frame that was saved by Rozman.

After a Le Moyne corner kick in the 57th minute, the ball popped out to Bauer about 25 yards from goal who struck it hard on the ground into the Saint Rose penalty area. First year midfielder Ziad Abdul-Malak (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), standing at the penalty mark, got a foot on the ball and redirected it towards goal, but it sailed above the cross bar for a goal kick.

Abdul-Malak, making his presence known off the bench in the Le Moyne defensive third, continuously disrupting the Golden Knights' attack, played a crafty ball between two defenders to Sparkes on the left wing in the 65th minute. Sparkes dribbled towards the middle of the field and put a shot on frame with his right foot, but it was scooped up by the keeper.

With 18 minutes remaining in regulation, Le Moyne center back Patrick Strauss (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) withstood a fast paced dribbling attack from Golden Knights forward Nico Faretta down the left wing, doing well to cleanly dispossess the striker in Le Moyne's penalty area.

In the 76th minute, following a Saint Rose corner kick, Kevin Winglosky pounced on a loose ball in the Le Moyne penalty area and sent a shot past Mahr into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.

Dolphin defenders Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany/Schul-und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin/Bridgeport) and Brent McKeown (Burlington, V.T./Rice/Hartwick) both made crucial sliding tackles in and around the Le Moyne penalty area in the final five minutes of regulation, keeping the score level and sending the match to extra time.

In the 91st minute Winglosky put Josh Elliot in on a breakaway towards the Le Moyne goal with a through ball from just inside of midfield. Elliot put his shot on the ground between Mahr and the near post and into the back of the net to end the game and give the Golden Knights a 2-1 win.

The Le Moyne College men's soccer team (5-3-0, 2-3-0 NE10) is back in action on Saturday, October 9 when they take on Assumption University at Ted Grant Field at 12:00 p.m.
