MEN'S SOCCER SCORES FIVE GOALS IN WIN OVER ASSUMPTION

Syracuse, N.Y.- The Le Moyne College men's soccer team bounced back from an extra time loss on Wednesday with a convincing 5-0 victory against Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption University at Ted Grant Field on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins received scoring contributions from Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira), Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne), Michael Sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Ninians), and two goals from Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) to earn the win and improve to 6-3 (3-3 NE10) on the season.

In the eighth minute of the match Jack Goodrich (Kellsall, England/King's School Chester) sent a cross from the left touchline over the leaping Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and towards the back post, where Sperduto headed the ball off the back legs of the Assumption defender contesting Falcone and into the back of the net to give Le Moyne a quick 1-0 lead.

Around two minutes later, Le Moyne center back Patrick Strauss (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) sent a long pass up to Stern at midfield. Stern, with a man on his back, chested it to Falcone, turned to his left and began sprinting up the right wing. Falcone played it to Sperduto checking back to the ball. Sperduto, with his back to goal and a defender behind him, flicked the ball to his left with his right foot into the path of Stern, who dashed towards goal and upon entering the Greyhounds penalty area ripped a shot on the ground with his right foot that whizzed through the legs of the Assumption goalkeeper to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead with 35 minutes remaining in the first half.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 3-0 in the 14th minute when Sparkes got the ball on the left touchline and sprinted into the Le Moyne attacking third, dribbling all the way to the 18-yard box before firing a shot with his right foot that slipped between the goalie and the near post and rippled the back of the net.

With 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Stern stole the ball at midfield and found Sparkes sprinting down the left wing. Sparkes made a move to his left past his defender, who had no choice but to foul the first-year forward just outside the Greyhounds' penalty area. Awarded a free kick in a dangerous spot, Goodrich and Rohrhirsch stood behind the ball. Goodrich ran past it, leaving Rohrhirsch to hit it. The graduate student stepped up and sent a strike with his right foot skipping across the ground into the bottom right corner of the net to give Le Moyne a 4-0 advantage heading into halftime.

In the 65th minute redshirt-junior defender Josh Doback (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) passed the ball to Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UNC Asheville) on the left side of the Le Moyne attacking third. Bauer dribbled to his right and from about 30 yards from goal lofted a pass over the Assumption defense toward the far post and onto the foot of Rohrhirsch, who skillfully brought the ball down and poked it past a trailing defender and the oncoming Assumption goalkeeper Goerge Dixon IV into the back of the net to give the Dolphins their fifth goal of the afternoon.

Le Moyne goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made six saves for the Dolphins and achieved his fourth clean sheet of the season.

The Le Moyne College men's soccer team will travel to Erie, Pa. on Tuesday, October 12 to take on Mercyhurst University at 1:00 p.m.
