Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne men's soccer team took down the #22 ranked Post University Eagles on Saturday with a 2-0 victory at Ted Grant Field.
"Really pleased with their performance, first fifteen or twenty minutes we started out a little slow, but then we picked it up." Said Le Moyne head coach Tom Bonus after the game, referencing the beginning of the contest which saw Post dominate possession and force Le Moyne goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) into action on a few occasions early on.Â
Three minutes after kickoff Mahr came off his line just in time to intercept a ball over the top intended for Post's Andrea Savio. Mahr then comfortably scooped up a shot on the ground by Sergio Diaz from just outside the box in the seventh minute.
Eventually the Dolphins settled in, held more possession, and began creating chances of their own.
In the 25th minute, junior forward Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UNC Asheville) sliced into the Post defense, pushing the ball past his defender on the left side of the penalty area, and finding an open
Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) in the center of the box, who ripped a shot that went just wide of the net.  Â
The Dolphins created another chance with 18 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the first half, when first year Michael Sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Ninians) found a cutting
Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) whose shot was saved at point blank range by the Post goalkeeper.Â
As the first half came to a close the score remained tied at 0-0.
The Dolphins came out strong in the second half, and broke the tie with a goal in the 58th minute. From the left side of the box, Bauer brought the ball down and played it in the air to redshirt junior midfielder Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) drifting towards the middle of the penalty area. Henne made an acrobatic lunge towards the ball, hitting it with his instep diagonally into the path of an oncoming Rohrhirsch, who buried the ball into the ground with a one-time strike on the laces of his right boot, bouncing the ball over the goalkeeper, and placing it softly in the back of the net to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later the Dolphins were on the attack again. This time it was Falcone who played a beautiful ball over the top of the defense from the top left corner of the box. As Rohrhirsch made a diagonal run across the penalty area towards the near post, the Post central defender followed him, leaving Henne wide open on the back post behind the defense, calmly knocking the ball into the goal with his forehead from six yards out, doubling the Le Moyne lead.Â
Mahr and the Le Moyne defense stood strong and held the lead for the remainder of the game, earning the goalie and his back line their second clean sheet of the season through three matches.
Rohrhirsch was pleased with the way the team fought today, "The connections between the players, the way we're setting up our game has improved a lot. I feel like we are fighting a lot more, we are a lot more aggressive."Â
The Dolphins have received scoring contributions from a handful of players, and coach Bonus thinks their balanced attack will be beneficial for the team going forward. "I thought the second half we played really well, it was a quality win. Anytime you can get a win like that (against a ranked opponent), especially on our home field, it's fantastic." added Bonus.
Le Moyne improves to 3-0-0 on the season, and will be back in action Wednesday, September 15th at 1:00 PM when they host Daemen College at Ted Grant Field.
