EXTRA TIME GOAL LIFTS AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL OVER MEN'S SOCCER

Syracuse, N.Y. - The American International College Yellow Jackets received a goal from freshman forward Niklas Stalzer in the sixth minute of the first overtime period to defeat the Le Moyne College men's soccer team 1-0 at Ted Grant Field on Wednesday evening. The loss was the first of the year for the Dolphins, who dropped to 4-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets remain undefeated with a 5-0-1 record and a 2-0-0 conference resume.

In the fifth minute of the contest American International sophomore Frans Dao got loose behind the Le Moyne defense, but senior defender Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany/Schul-und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin/Bridgeport) was able to track him down and stall the Yellow Jacket attack which eventually took a shot that the Dolphins defense blocked.

Le Moyne left back Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) was involved in the team's attack early on, getting forward and providing service into the AIC penalty area. Goodrich found a cutting Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) in the seventh minute but a Yellow Jacket defender was able to make the tackle just outside the 18-yard box. With 36:27 remaining in the first half, Goodrich was on the attack again, this time sending a cross into the box from the left sideline with a great deal of pace aimed for freshman forward Michael Sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Ninians) running towards the back post, but the ball skipped across the slick turf to the opposite sideline before a Le Moyne attacker could get on it.

With 19 minutes remaining in the first half graduate student Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) played a creative ball over the head of an AIC defender to Falcone cutting along the left side of the 18-yard box. Falcone found junior Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UNC Asheville) checking towards the middle of the penalty area, but his shot went high and wide.

The Dolphins created their best scoring opportunity of the half in the 38th minute when Falcone entered the AIC defensive third, probing the defense with the ball at his feet. The senior midfielder found Rohrhirsch making a run into the box, who then took a dribble towards goal before playing it across the penalty area to Goodrich who ripped a shot on goal that was saved by American International goalkeeper Lucas Morales-Fernandez.

Le Moyne goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was needed early on in the second half, saving a shot from Mathis Pilon St. Louis in the 51st minute.

Eight minutes into the second half Bauer sent a pass to Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne), who got by his defender and ripped a shot on goal, but it was saved by Morales-Fernandez.

With 16 minutes remaining in regulation Falcone dribbled towards the AIC goal, attacking the Yellow Jacket defense and playing a ball to Rohrhirsch who took a couple dribbles in the box before locating Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) in the middle of the penalty area, but his shot was blocked by the American International defense.

Forward Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) was able to put a shot on frame off a Le Moyne corner kick but his header was stopped by Morales-Fernandez.

Neither side was able to put a shot on goal during the last ten minutes of the second half, so the match was sent to extra time.

With five minutes remaining in the first extra time period the ball bounced out to around 25 yards from the AIC net, Le Moyne senior midfielder Terence Crysler-Howard (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Prep School) ran onto it and struck the ball one-time towards goal. Morales-Fernandez was able to successfully deflect the shot away from net and keep the score level.

In the sixth minute of the first overtime period the AIC attack drew Mahr off his line, and Stalzer was able to place the ball in the back of the Le Moyne goal to end the contest and give American International the 1-0 victory.

The Le Moyne men's soccer team will travel to Rindge, New Hampshire on Tuesday, September 28 to take on Franklin Pierce University at 4:00 p.m.
