Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team will host a non-conference match on Wednesday against the visiting Daemen University Wildcats. The match will kick off at 4:00 p.m. on Ted Grant Field.
Following a disheartening 3-2 loss against the University of New Haven on Saturday in NE10 action, the Dolphins will have an opportunity to get back on track during a non-conference game against the Wildcats, who are currently 1-3-1 in the East Coast Conference, before they embark on their final stretch of conference battles.
After Wednesday's match against Daemen, four games will remain on Le Moyne's regular season schedule, and they are all conference contests.
Both
Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) and
Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) scored their first goal of the 2022 campaign during Saturday's loss to the Chargers.
After UNH went up 1-0 at the end of the first half, the Dolphins looked determined and focused to begin the second half, and they equalized on a well-worked goal in the 53
rd minute that began with a medium aerial ball from Goodrich, included two skillful one-touch passes from
Cameron Stuart (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) and
Max Buesch (Odenthal, Germany/Gymnasium Odenthal/Bethany Lutheran) then culminated in a great one-touch finish from Henne.
Jack Goodrich's goal was more a display of individual skill.
After Buesch earned a free kick just outside the UNH penalty box on the right wing, Goodrich delivered a dazzling set piece, curling the ball with his left foot and striking the far post, causing the ball to ricochet into the net and give the 'Phins a 2-1 lead.
The Chargers went on to score two goals in the final minute to claim an improbable come-from-behind win.
The Dolphins are still very much in the NE10 playoff picture. They are currently tied in 8
th place (eight teams make the NE10 Conference Championships) with Bentley, while UNH currently occupies 10
th place in the standings.
Le Moyne will travel to Saint Michael's (12
th place) on October 15
th, then they will host Adelphi University (tied – 3
rd place) and Saint Anselm College (6
th place) the following week, and they will close the regular season with a match at Assumption University (2
nd place) on October 25.
The Dolphins will be without graduate goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) against the Wildcats after Mahr, who has started all 11 games in net this season for Le Moyne, received a red card at the end of the New Haven game.
The veteran goalkeeper will likely be replaced by freshman keeper
Matthew Gera (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) who, like Mahr, previously starred for a local CNY high school.
Stuart currently leads the Dolphins in points during his first collegiate campaign, having tallied three goals and three assists through 11 match appearances, seven of them starts.
Graduate forward
Max Buesch has seven points this season via three goals and one assist, while Henne, Goodrich and graduate midfielder
Terence Crysler-Howard (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Prep School) each have one goal and one assist in 2022.
The team has also had to deal with the absence of graduate defender
Benedict Klimmek (Kiel, Germany/RBZ am Schützenpark) who was vital for the team at center back before suffering an injury during the Southern Connecticut State game.
Daemen is coming off a 2-0 loss at Molloy, who is currently ranked 8
th in the East Region according to the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
Senior defender Derek Bartlo has started all 11 games this season for Daemen and leads the team in points with four goals and three assists along with a team-high 17 shots.
Junior midfielder Nassim Zahouani leads the Wildcats with eight shots on goal in 2022 and has tallied two goals and two assists.
Freshman forward Riccardo Boscolo Bachetto has contributed three goals in eight match appearances.
Graduate goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar has started 10 games in net for the Wildcats during which he's made 59 saves and accumulated two clean sheets.
The Dolphins have won the last six matchups between the two men's soccer programs. The last time the two sides met was in September of 2019 and Le Moyne came away with a 7-1 victory over the Wildcats.
