11/29/2022 11:20:00 AM

Syracuse, N.Y. – Le Moyne College head baseball coach Scott Cassidy '98 announced on Tuesday morning that six student-athletes have signed Letters of Intent to attend Le Moyne and play for the Dolphins in 2024. The class consists of outfielder Chaz Anthony, right-handed pitcher William Canale, outfielder/infielder/left-handed pitcher Jack Cannon, left-handed pitcher Max Danaher, catcher Cooper Romich and infielder Michael Whelehan.

"We have signed six quality baseball players so far and we could not be happier with the makeup of this class," said head coach Scott Cassidy '98. "They all have a chance to make immediate contributions and we can't wait to see them develop in the years to come."

0Chaz Anthony – OF – Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool
Anthony is an outfielder who had a great junior season in 2022 at Liverpool High School. He led his team in batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS en route to earning First Team SCAC All-Conference and First Team All-CNY. He continued his hot hitting into the summer, where he hit .414 with five home runs.

Cassidy on Anthony: "Chaz has made some great strides throughout his high school career and really burst on the scene last year with his ability to drive the baseball. He is a tireless worker that dedicates himself to the sport and it shows. He has the ability to not only get on base but also has some pop in his bat. He is always a tough out. It will be fun to watch his progress at the college level"

0William Canale – RHP – Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna
Canale is a right-handed pitcher who is coming off of an impressive summer. He finished the summer circuit with a 6-1 record with two saves. In 54 innings pitched, he gave up just 25 hits while striking out 85 batters on his way to a 1.17 ERA.

Cassidy on Canale: "I am really excited to see Billy at the college level. He has a great pitcher's makeup with the ability to pound the strike zone with a live fastball and an above average slider. This kid really knows how to pitch. He already throws mid to upper 80's and with added strength I believe he will be a hard throwing righty in no time. He will definitely be a guy to keep an eye on."

0Jack Cannon – OF/INF/LHP – Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder
Cannon is an outfielder who can play first base as well as pitch. He is coming off of a high school season where, as a team captain, he was named to the Division I First Team All-County as well as to the All-Greater Rochester Honorable Mention list for Division I. Starting mostly in the outfield, he hit .300 with two doubles, five triples and two home runs to go along with 23 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. On the mound, he finished with a record of 3-2 with a 2.43 ERA with 37 strikeouts.

Cassidy on Cannon: "Jack is a big, strong kid who can play multiple positions as well as pitch. He has a great combination of speed and power that will make him a dynamic player for the next several years. He is an on-base machine and he can wreak havoc on the bases, but also has a chance to be a middle-of-the-order hitter who can drive in runs."

0Max Danaher – LHP – Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius
Danaher is a tall lefty who has had some great success on the mound this past season. He ended his high school season with 53 innings pitched with 45 strikeouts and a 1.98 ERA. He was the leader of the pitching staff that took his team to the state finals.

Cassidy on Danaher: "Max is a gamer. He has a really good idea of what he is doing out there and how to set up hitters. He keeps them off balanced with a three-pitch mix and throws them all for strikes. He has proven that he is a big-game pitcher at the high school level and we are looking forward to that same mentality here on the Heights."

0Cooper Romich – C – North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili
Romich is coming off of a high school season that earned him Team MVP, First Team All-County and Scholar-Athlete honors. He batted .412 with 28 hits and seven doubles to go along with 11 RBI and eight walks.

Cassidy on Romich: "Cooper can do it on both sides of the ball. He is an outstanding defensive catcher who can control the running game and is tough as nails. Combine that with his ability to drive the baseball and you have what could be a dynamic player at the college level. He has the ability to be a middle-of-the-order hitter and run producer."

0Michael Whelehan – INF – Hilton, N.Y./Hilton
Whelehan had an outstanding high school year that garnered him the 2022 Monroe County Division 1 Player of the Year, First Team All-Greater Rochester and First Team All-County. He hit .459 with 10 extra base hits and 18 stolen bases.

Cassidy on Whelehan: "Michael can flat out play! He can do it all on the field as evident by his success in high school. He is a smooth-fielding infielder with good hands and an above average arm. He can make all the plays to keep him on the left side of the field. His offensive ability surely doesn't fall behind as he can use the whole field and can run as well. Plain and simply put, he is a gamer."

The Dolphins return 17 letterwinners, including four starting position players and two starting pitchers, from last year's 27-25 squad, which advanced to the NCAA East Regional. The Dolphins open the 2023 season on February 17 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

The National Letter-of-Intent program was started in 1964. Administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), the program was designed with prospective student-athletes in mind. A signed letter-of-intent indicates a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. Institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year to the student-athlete, provided the student-athlete is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.
