Cary, N.C. – The Goldey-Beacom Lightning took both games of the Friday afternoon doubleheader against the Le Moyne College baseball team at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
The Lightning scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the first game of the doubleheader, 4-3. Goldey-Beacom scored four runs during the third inning of the second game and eventually won the back end of the doubleheader by a score of 8-3.
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) started game 1 on the mound for the 'Phins, and registered seven strikeouts through five innings of work.
Vail gave up a double and hit a batter to start the bottom of the first inning, but the graduate left-hander settled in and struck out the next three Goldey-Beacom batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
Vail found himself in a similar situation during the second inning, with one man out and a man on third. Once again, Vail battled to keep the game scoreless, striking out the next two Goldey-Beacom batters to end the bottom half of the inning.
The Lightning scored the first run of the game during the bottom of the third inning via an RBI single from sophomore Garrett Musey. Goldey-Beacom scored two more runs during the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Junior center fielder
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) drew a walk to start the top of the sixth inning, then stole second base. Brush advanced to third base on a
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) deep fly ball to left field.
A slow roller from
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) brought Brush in to score, and a throwing error from the Goldey-Beacom shortstop allowed Nevins to reach first base safely.
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) stepped up to the plate next for Le Moyne and was hit by a pitch.
With men on first and second, graduate right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) ripped a single through the right side of the infield, and Nevins came around from second base to score the second run of the inning for the Dolphins.
Sophomore right-hander
Kennen Smith (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) took over on the mound for Vail and struck out two batters during a scoreless bottom of the 6
th inning. Smith struck out two more batters during a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning, then pitched another 1-2-3 inning during the bottom of the 8
th to end his day's work.
With Le Moyne trailing 3-2,
Michael Smith led off the top of the ninth inning with a ground ball up the middle to put the tying run on first base.
Senior outfielder
Richie Kuhar (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) came in to pinch run for Smith. Freshman designated hitter
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, I.L./Adlai E. Stevenson) stepped up to the plate looking to bunt the runner over to second, but his second attempt rolled foul, giving him two strikes, and forcing him to alter plans.
During the next pitch, Kuhar broke for second base and Ries swung at the pitch. The batted ball bounced right back to the pitcher, who fielded it cleanly. Kuhar got a good jump and the pitcher realized that after a quick glance to second and threw the ball to first base to record the first out of the inning.
With the tying run on second base, sophomore left fielder
Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) drove the ball through the right side of the infield, which brought Kuhar around to score and tied the game at 3-3.
Junior right-hander
Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) took over for Smith on the mound for the bottom of the ninth inning.
Goldey-Beacom first year infielder Braden Kolmansberger drove the ball to right center, and after Brush nearly made a diving catch, the ball hit the ground and Kolmansberger reached second base safely with no one out.
A deep fly ball to center field allowed Kolmansberger to tag up and advance to third base. A single to left field by junior first baseman Marshall Awtry brought in Kolmasnberger to score, ending the game and giving Goldey-Beacom a 4-3 win.
During the second half of the double-header, sophomore left-hander
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) got the start on the mound for Le Moyne. Parker struck out four batters and gave up three earned runs in three innings of work, taking the loss for game two.
Goldey-Beacom scored a run in the top of the first inning, but the 'Phins answered back during the bottom half of the second inning. Senior first basemen
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) drew a walk to begin the bottom of the second. Then Smith singled to right field. Ries grounded out, but Syta and Smith both advanced bases to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Boule put the ball in play to knock in Syta and reached first base safely while Smith stayed at second base. Sophomore catcher
Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) stepped up to the plate next and ripped the ball into left field. Smith sprinted around third base but was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Lightning belted two doubles and scored four runs during the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Dolphins responded with two runs during the bottom of the inning. Nevins got things going with a one-out single to right field. Miller drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Syta stepped to the plate and ripped a single to right field, driving in Nevins and moving Miller to second base. Smith walked to load the bases. Ries grounded the ball to second, and the Lightning second baseman flipped the ball to the short stop for the second out, but Ries beat out the throw to first base to avoid the double play and allow Miller to score the second run of the inning. Boule lined out to second base to end the inning.
Senior left-hander
Ryan Dubord (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) took the ball for Le Moyne at the start of the 4
th inning and dealt 1-2-3 innings during the top of the 4
th and 5
th. Dubord ran into trouble during the top of the sixth inning, and the Lightning scored three more runs to take an 8-3 lead.
The Dolphins were unable to get a hit during the final two innings of the second half of the doubleheader and fell to the Lightning, 8-3.
Goldey-Beacom improved to 2-4 following the doubleheader, and the Dolphins dropped to 0-2.
The Le Moyne College baseball team will return to the USA Baseball National Training Complex tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Mercy College.
