BASEBALL SPLITS SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

New Haven, Conn. – The Le Moyne College baseball team split their Saturday afternoon Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on the road against Southern Connecticut State University. The Dolphins won the first game 12-4 with the help of Ty Syta's first career two-homerun game. Syta hit his third and fourth homeruns of the season during the victory and finished the contest with a career-high six RBIs along with two walks and three runs scored.

SCSU center fielder Andrew Eng hit two homeruns during game two, the second of which was a grand-slam walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 7th inning to lift the Owls to a 7-3 victory over the Dolphins.

Sophomore left-hander Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) went 7.0 innings on the mound in game one to earn the win, and Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) pitched the final 2.0 innings without allowing a hit to secure the victory for the 'Phins.

Junior right-hander Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) threw 6.0+ innings for Le Moyne during the game two loss, during which he struck out 11 Southern Connecticut State hitters.

Senior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) pulled a single through the left side of the infield with one out in the top of the first inning of game number one to give Le Moyne their first baserunner of the afternoon. With two outs in the inning, Syta smashed his first homerun of the game over the left field wall to give the 'Phins an early 2-0 lead.

Le Moyne added a run in the top of the 2nd. Graduate right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and graduate catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, then graduate third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) hit a fly ball to center field that allowed Smith to tag-up and advance to third base. With two outs and runners on first and third, junior center fielder Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) laced a line drive up the middle into center field to drive in Smith and put Le Moyne up 3-0.

A leadoff double down the left field line followed by a base hit to center field gave the Owls their first run of the day in the bottom of the 2nd to trim their deficit to 3-1.

In the top of the 3rd inning, senior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) led off the inning with a base hit into right field. Syta reached on a fielding error to put runners on first and second with zero outs, then sophomore right fielder Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third with one out. Smith did his job next by lifting a fly ball to left field which allowed Nevins to tag-up and dash home to give the 'Phins a 4-1 lead.

Southern Connecticut State scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd via four singles and a throwing error to tie the game at 4-4.

Le Moyne took back the lead in the top of the 4th.

Sophomore Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) reached on a fielding error and advanced to second base to lead off the inning, then Miller hit a ground ball to move Fureno to third.

Brush came to the plate next and hit the ball into left field, but the SCSU fielder could not make the play, and Fureno came home to score, giving the 'Phins a 5-4 advantage.

Syta led off the top of the 5th inning with a walk, then Boule hit the ball into shallow left-center field. The Southern Connecticut State center fielder dove to try and record the putout, but the ball dropped onto the grass. Syta advanced to third on the play, and Boule hustled into second base for a double.

Drew Fureno drew a one-out walk to load the bases, then Brady Fureno ripped a ground ball through the left side of the infield to drive in Syta and Boule and put the 'Phins up 7-4.

After a pitching change, Miller pulled a double down the left field line that brought Drew Fureno around to score and extended Le Moyne's lead to 8-4.

Brady Fureno reached on a fielding error to lead off the top of the 9th inning. Brush hit a one-out double down the right field line which advanced Fureno to third base.

Nevins drew a two-out walk to load the bases, then Syta blasted a grand-slam homerun over the right field wall to double Le Moyne's lead.

DiGeorge recorded two strikeouts during a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th to close out the first game of the afternoon.

Both teams put a combined two runners on base during the first three innings of game number two, but the Owls got on the board in the bottom of the 4th when Eng hit a solo homerun over the right field wall.

Drew Fureno led off the top of the 6th for the 'Phins with an infield base hit, then Brady Fureno singled to the left fielder to put runners on first and second with zero outs.

A Drew Carroll walk later in the inning with two outs loaded the bases. Nevins singled to the third baseman to drive in Brady Fureno and tie the game at 1-1.

Syta continued his big day with a two-RBI line drive into right field that brought Brush and Carroll in to score and gave the 'Phins a 3-1 lead.

Down to their final three outs and facing a two-run deficit, the Owls drew a walk, then knocked back-to-back singles to load the bases with zero outs in the bottom of the 7th. Zambito was hit by a pitch which brought a runner in to score and cut the Owls' deficit to 3-2.

First year right-hander Steven Freer (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out as the Dolphins clung to a one-run lead.

Sullivan singled to right field to tie the game at 3-3, then Eng hit his second homerun of the day, a grand-slam homerun over the left field fence to end the game and give the Owls a 7-3 victory over the Dolphins.

The Le Moyne College baseball team now holds a 10-12 record on the season and will play another doubleheader against the Owls in New Haven on Sunday. First pitch for game one of Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. EST.
