Albany, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team lost two one-run games on Saturday afternoon at the College of Saint Rose.
The Golden Knights scored three runs in the final three innings during the first half of the doubleheader to claim a 5-4 win over the Dolphins in game one, then Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning during game two and held on to win the seven-inning contest by a score of 2-1.
Sophomore left-handed starting pitching
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) allowed three earned runs during 8.0 innings of work in game one and struck out six Golden Knight hitters.
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) launched a three-run home run, his fifth long ball of the season, during game one and
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) went 2-4 with a double and a stolen base in the 5-4 defeat.
Cameron Flynn did not allow a run in 3.0 innings in relief during game one, and left fielder James Ward recorded an RBI triple and a run scored during the Saint Rose victory.
Graduate left-handed starting pitcher
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) allowed just one earned run in 6.0 innings of work during game two, but Anthony Amoroso went the distance and earned the victory on the mound for the Golden Knights.
Brush went 4-4 with a double during the 2-1 loss, and Nevins and
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) each recorded two hits during the second half of the doubleheader.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 during the bottom of the 1
st in game one when Nathan Toms smacked an RBI double into right-center field.
Second baseman Vince Venditti manufactured a run for the Golden Knights in the bottom of the 2
nd by hitting a one out single to right field, stealing second base, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on throwing error. Vendittii's run put Saint Rose up 2-0.
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) ripped a single up the middle to lead off the top of the 5
th for Le Moyne.
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) beat out a bunt single to put runners on first and second.
Following a force out at third base,
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) hammered a double into the right-center field gap which brought
Drew Fureno home to score and moved
Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) over to third.
With runners on second and third, Brush lifted a three-run homerun over the right field fence to put the 'Phins up 4-2.
The Golden Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the 6
th, via a single, a triple, and a SAC fly, to tie the game at 4-4.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the 7
th inning, then the Dolphins threatened in the top of the 8
th.
Nevins ripped a one-out double in the left-center field gap, then Syta was intentionally walked, and
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) moved both runners over with a ground ball to the third baseman.
Smith stepped to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third. With the game still tied 4-4, Smith hit a line drive towards left field.
Saint Rose left fielder James Ward got a good jump on the ball, charged forward, dove, and made an excellent catch to end the inning and save at least one, and possibly two runs.
Parker delivered a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8
th for the Dolphins, then Le Moyne went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 9
th.
Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y/Canastota) entered the game to pitch the bottom of the 9
th for Le Moyne.
DiGeorge got a fly ball, then hit a batter, then recorded a strikeout. The runner on first stole second base, then scored on a fielding error, which ended the game and gave the Golden Knights a 5-4 victory during the first half of the doubleheader.
During game two, Saint Rose scored two runs during the bottom of the 1
st inning due to a leadoff walk, followed by a hit by pitch, then an RBI single, a double play and a fielding error.
Syta hit a double down the right field line to lead off the top of the 2
nd inning, but Amoroso got a fly ball, a ground ball and a strikeout consecutively to end the inning and keep the 'Phins scoreless.
Brush led off the top of the 6
th inning with a base hit to center field for Le Moyne, then with one out Nevins singled to center field. Syta hit an RBI single into right field to cut the deficit in half.
Down to their final three outs,
Brady Fureno was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the 7
th inning, giving Le Moyne a baserunner while trailing by just one run.
Richie Kuhar (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) entered the game to pinch run.
Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kuhar into scoring position. Brush doubled into left field, and Kuhar was held up at third.
With one out and runners on second and third, Amoroso got a strike out and a fly out to end the game and complete the win for the Golden Knights.
The Le Moyne College baseball team now holds an 8-4 record in conference play, and will play another doubleheader against the Golden Knights on Sunday to conclude the four-game NE10 weekend series.
