KLIMMEK NAMED NE10 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mansfield, Mass. – Graduate center back Benedict Klimmek (Kiel, Germany/RBZ am Schützenpark) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the first week of the 2022 season during which the Dolphins men's soccer team won a pair of 1-0 non-conference victories.

During Le Moyne's season opener against Caldwell on Thursday, Klimmek played the full 90 minutes as the Dolphins defensive unit allowed only two shots on goal and kept a clean sheet to start the regular season with a 1-0 victory.

During the team's second match of the season at Jefferson, Klimmek and the rest of Le Moyne's defense stifled the Rams offense and allowed just one shot on goal. Klimmek played the full 90 minutes once again, and for the second consecutive game the Dolphins did not allow a goal.

In the 62nd minute of Sunday's match against the Rams in Philadelphia the score was still tied 0-0 and the Dolphins earned a corner kick. As outside back Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) made his way to the corner flag to take the kick, 6'7" Klimmek jogged into the Jefferson penalty area.

Goodrich took the corner with his left foot and sent his pass in the air towards the middle of the 18-yard box. Klimmek attacked the ball as it dove towards the ground, heading the ball with great pace past the Jefferson goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the 'Phins the necessary go-ahead goal to earn a 1-0 road victory early in the season.

Le Moyne goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was named to the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll after completing two shutouts to start the season.
