AVOTINS EARNS MEDALIST HONORS TO LEAD WOMEN’S GOLF TO SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT CARDINAL CLASSIC

Hagerstown, Md. – Sophomore Mia Avotins (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) earned medalist honors to lead the Le Moyne College women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Catholic University on Saturday and Sunday at the par-72, 5617-yard Black Rock Golf Course.

The Dolphins registered a two-day score of 662 to place second. They carded a 327 on Saturday to land in first place by five shots and then turned in a 335 in the second round. The host Cardinals claimed first place with a total of 656 after posting a 332 in the first round and an event-best 324 on Sunday. Washington & Jefferson placed third with a 672 off rounds of 339 and 333.

Avotins earned medalist honors for the second time in her career by one shot with a 36-hole total of 156, her second-best mark of the year. She opened the event with a 79, which featured a birdie and nine pars, to land in a three-way tie for first place. She then registered three birdies and seven pars en route to a 77 and first place on her own.

Freshman Thais Forbes (Atlanta, Ga./Coral Gables (Fla.)) tied for ninth place with a total of 166. She joined Avotins in the tie for first place after a 79 in the first round, which included four birdies. She added an 87 on day two to slip in the standings.

Freshmen Riley Stuver (Webster, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and Emily Barnes (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) finished as part of a three-way tie for 13th place at 170. Stuver recorded an 83, which included three birdies, in the first round to land in eighth place and followed with an 87 in the second round to finish with the second-best score of her career. Barnes tallied the two best rounds of her career with an 86 on Saturday to land in 13th place and then turned in an 84 in the second round to remain in 13th.

Graduate student Meghan McKeen (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) tied for 17th place with a 176 following rounds of 86 and 90.

Senior Elyse Maniccia (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), who played as an individual, registered the best 36-hole score of her career with a 183 after recording a 94 and a career-best 89.

The Dolphins are back in action on April 3 and 4 at West Chester University's Dr. Edwin Cottrell Invitational at Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester, Pa.
